Re: FFJMOORE CB550 Atomic #13 Motor in

Got some parts back from the Pwder coater. This was as far as i got last night. Want to get the rear wheel on and then back on the lift.

I'll admit I was skeptical of the green frame for a whopping .00000027 seconds but this looks fantastic!

Re: FFJMOORE CB550 Atomic #13 Motor in

+1 It really does look great. I bet it looks even better in person too.

Re: FFJMOORE CB550 Atomic #13 Motor in

Well. I have been doing the wiring the last few days. I started with the Electronic ignition, and then the regulator and rectifier. Then it was on to the Ignition/key switch, coils, blinkers, headlight, kill switch and the speedo/tach with dummy lights. I am almost there!

After that i have to put the oil pan on to button up the motor and then do all the valves and timing stuff. Oh! and put oil in.
Not trying to start a debate but should i use semi synthetic? What are you guys that build race bikes putting in your fresh motors?

Built a coil mounting plate.

This is the mesh expandable cable wrap im using. I like it, looks pretty clean.

Lots of wires. The Key is an On/OFF/ACC/START switch so it has a temporary switch to use for the starter like a car.

Everything should tuck nicely above the coil.

OH and now that i think about it i still have to pull wire for my tail light and the switch for the brake. Im going to use a taillight from custom dynamics. Going to mount it under the tail in the back.

looking good, where are you mounting your battery?

Re: FFJMOORE CB550 Atomic #13 Motor in

Everything I have ever read about oil seems to point to regular dino oil is best for breaking in a fresh motor, then switch to whatever oil you like to run after. And that is one sexy job on the bike, the frame with all the polish looks killer.

Re: FFJMOORE CB550 Atomic #13 Motor in

I use the cheapest oil I can find for 'race' motors, it isn't going to be in it under load or stay in motor for more than 20 mins
straight SAE 20~30 diesel works well, it's high detergent and higher ZDDP level.
Get engine hot, drain and re-fill with Rotella 15/40 for 100 miles and drain again plus cut open filter to see whats been trapped (if anything)

Re: FFJMOORE CB550 Atomic #13 Motor in

Its always something. I ordered some 90° arms

Then when i was finishing up the wiring and checking the blinkers, 1 of them was shorting out. So once i tracked it down and took it apart (their sealed LEDs), insulated the part that i think was rubbing and the super glued it back together, all was good. I might hang the exhaust tomorrow, stay tuned.

Sooo true, it is ALWAYS something! At least it can be fixed easily! Killer work man. :D

Re: Flying J CB550 Atomic #13 WIRE WIRE WIRE

Yep, if you want to ride get a new bike, if you want an old bike you'd better like tinkering with it ;D 8)

Re: Flying J CB550 Atomic #13 WIRE WIRE WIRE

You know me well enough and seen my list of bikes. I love to tinker.

Re: Flying J CB550 Atomic #13 WIRE WIRE WIRE

Tinkering is probably more than half the fun ;D

Mounted my tail light. Really happy with how it worked out. Also got half the pipes hung.

Re: Flying J CB550 Atomic #13 Brake light

I tried bending it more to clear the carbs now that i have them in place but it aint going to work. Think im going to have to cut the bungs off and weld in new ones. I have an email into the tank builder. See what he says.
