Frame Brazing

I was wanting to braze a frame to give the welds a brass look. I believe I saw this done or at least a technique that gave this look to the welds on a episode of CR. I don't remember what show it was or what season. I believe it was 2 seasons ago. Does any one have any info they can add to this or point me into the right direction?

Thank you.

Re: Frame Brazing

That would be the dresda frames your on about that are all bronze brazed, brazing isn't so much welding as you don't melt the two pieces together to form the bond, you use a bronze rod to effectively glue them together. If done right its very strong and looks quite nice.

I think he's talking about sweating another material on top of the stock welds to make it look cool. I very much doubt CRTV would waste the air time on a shop who built scratch frames properly.

I believe I remember that episode and if I also remember correctly the guy said he knew very few people that could do this because it was an art form and extremely difficult to do correctly.

So good luck but that episode was also done in the UK if I remember correctly.

SIF Bronze 'welding' is pretty difficult to do properly but does give great frames.
Ordinary brazing isn't the same thing, not sure it would be a good idea on a production frame as you would have to get sections to at least red heat which is likely to distort things unless properly jigged up (not the same as having a bunch of tubs brazed in specific sequence)

Brazing is hard!

+1 on that, the prep needs to be meticulous the joint near perfect and as Crazy says you need it all in a frame jig. Unless you want a collection of randomly bent tubes.
Had to do loads of it during an apprenticeship and never done it since.

Re: Frame Brazing

That frame above is beautiful.

When i was in college there was a professor who gave small classes in structural brazing. I got to audit a couple times and it was truly amazing to watch.
