FRAME PAINT! ANYBODY GOT EXPERIENCE WITH THIS STUFF??

Been Around the Block
DOING A GROUND UP ON A CX 500. DIDNT POWDER COAT THE FRAME THIS TIME AND IM TRYING A NEW PAINT. ITS CALLED VHT ROLL BAR AND FRAME PAINT. LOOKS LIKE THE RIGHT STUFF TO USE FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS SO I AM USING IT ON ALL MY FRAME PIECES. ANYBODY HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH IT? SO FAR IT LOOKS GOOD WITH A NICE SEMI GLOSS SHINE THAT I WANT. IT SEEMS TO HOLD UP GOOD TOO BECAUSE IVE DROPPED SOME OF THE PAINTED PARTS ON THE GROUND AND THE PAINT HELD UP WITH NO CHIPPING. DONT KNOW HOW IT WILL HOLD ON THE LONG RUN THOUGH.

Never had great luck with most spray can paint but this stuff might be more durable. You may want to leave it in the sun if at all possible to help it cure. Couldn't hurt anything.

The can says two light coats and one medium coat. Let it flash 10 minutes between each coat. No primer needed and you can spray right on bare metal. I did not sand the frame down to bare metal but just did a light sanding to the old black frame paint in order for the new paint to stick. Than thoroughly degreased and washed the frame. I let the frame dry off than put four coats of paint in all. Two light coats and two heavier coats. Seems to be working good so far.

I've used the VHT "epoxy" paint on a couple of frames, and it's held up pretty well so far.

It's what I use, or appliance epoxy. Holds up well enough for my needs.

My entire bike is done with various shades of vht epoxy. Cheap and durable, can't complain.

Getinda, a word of advice, take it or leave it... rushing in like a bull in a China shop (ALL CAPS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF YELLING, YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE KNOWN THAT BUT NOW YOU DO), offering to answer questions that have been answered at length elsewhere, such as painting frames (these forums have search functions, most people use them before they post), and offering unsolicited advice to people ("I AM A CARBURETOR GOD, ASK ME ANYTHING LET ME TELL YOU WHAT TO DO") has already rubbed some of the more competent folks here the wrong way. None will get you banned, but you've posted 50-something times in a day or so (See this: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=52354.0). Relax, buddy! You obviously mean well, and it's great that you're eager to contribute, but before offering to solve everyone's problems (and answering with useless blather, see the carburetor thread and the guy who was fucking with you) you might want to wait for people to post questions that you're suited to answer. Or don't.

I just checked all the frame pieces this morning and the VHT paint looks good. I figured it cant be much more different than what Honda used to paint their frames. The stuff seems affordable, durable, and the best thing is I can touch it up when ever I need to later on if the paint gets damaged, which is the one big advantage over powder coated frames in my opinion. Seems promising so far!

Wow! 57 posts IN A DAY!

Listen to this advice. You say you are a qualified mechanic, so maybe you should listen to some of the members you have already engaged with. People who have 20 years plus of motorcycle mechanics experience.

ummm yeaaa soo anyways frame paint? anybody?? what kind have you used??

Using an inferior product (paint) has the advantage of being easy to fix when it WILL chip. The disadvantage of a superior (powder coating) is it harder to touch up IF it chips , which is highly unlikely. Makes sense to me. ::)

I've been very happy with POR15's products. I've used it on a number of car/bike parts over the years. It's what I intend to use on my TX650 frame. You just need to use their top coat stuff, as the regular stuff is uv sensitive.

Chill dude. If you already painted your frame, it's a bit of a moot point what anyone else used unless you are just trolling for posts. There's nothing "illegal" about doing that, but it a D/B move that no one appreciates. You had something to contribute and that's good, but let it go. :)

Take the lid off the can and pour it into the spray gun? Then there is always this novel idea of reading the directions on the can for spraying. ::)
