looking to put a 1977 xl175 front end on a 1974 cb450 so I can use the 21" wheel, and drum brake. has anyone done this? will it work?

FWIW, Allballs list the bearings to fit a Honda XL125 V VARADERO (Euro) 2001 front end on a cb450 k3-k7 frame.

XL175 forks tubes are smaller, the forks are shorter, and you won't gain anything but even less performance. They ran the front fender under the bottom triple, so you aren't getting longer fork lowers or anything like that. In fact, the XL lowers are smaller and shorter. You'll actually lose fender mounts on the lowers.

No dirt bike front end is necessarily front wheel size specific, since the only thing that factors in to that on most other bikes is the fender struts and/or mounting locations on the fork lowers. In many cases, you can alter your fender struts or even run a fork brace, like a Tarozzi, that mounts to the bottom of the lowers and mount your fender to it.

As far as fork tube matches, check out the Fork Diameters List:
