fuel feed problem

Been Around the Block
i have got a fuel feed problem....trying to figure out where it its. I took my fuel lines off of the fuel petcock on my 73CB450 and i turned the fuel selecter to "reserve" and then "on" and nothing came out.....is this normal? The bike runs whenever i squirt starter fluid into the carbs and runs until there is no more fluid to burn. I havent done anything to the carbs other than clean out the float bowls so i may need to soak them in a cleaner. But if i can eliminate the petcock issue i can focus solely on the carbs.

oh yeah and i will add the fuel petcock i bought was a new one.

Nope... that's not normal...If theres no fuel coming out of the Fuel-tap then the carbs are not getting any fuel from the tank...
I guess the first and most obvious question is... is there gas in the tank??
if so, then Id suggest that you have a plugged fuel-tap. Id take apart the fueltap to find out why its plugged...

If its an old fuel-tap, sometime the o-ring that sits between the tank & fuel tap hole dries up and breaks off into the hole that the fuel is suppose to go through..
Before you'd drain all the fuel and remove the tap, Id use some compressed air and spray air into 2 the exit holes on the tap where the fuel line is suppose connect to...

If there is no fuel coming out anyhow spray air directly into the holes and see if it dislodges anything that is blocking it...
If fuel starts to come out then you know that you've temproarily solved that problem... then just drain the tank and get rid of all the crap...

something was dislodged...hit me right in the eye......not sure if that was a large enough particle to cause probs but its gone now.,,,

ok i disassembled the fuel petcock and blew air through it...then i reassembled and connected the fuel hoses to the carbs after reattaching the petcock to the fuel tank. Removed the fuel bowls one at a time and turned selector to on....fuel began to flow.
Now that i am sure it is working correctly i am looking for carb rebuild kits......anyone recommend a certain soak fluid for the cars or is parts solvent ok?

To save your (wallet sitting in a pocket on your) ass in the future, I'd spend the $5 and get an inline filter for your fuel line. Seriously.
