Funny little bit of writting about the Midwest...

Forward

Been Around the Block
It mentions Wisconsin, but I think it holds true for the entire Midwest

It goes something like this...Spring. Awesome. You finally get to go outside and forget all of your winter time blues. Though its windy, wet, and cold off and on, you can finally be outside without a full winter jumpsuit of clothes. You can even ride your bike outside! And just when the new semi-warm weather loses its appeal, the summer blossoms.

Beautiful and green, pleasant and warm. The long summer in Wisconsin seems eternal and its never better. Hot days, cool nights, complimented with the occasional thunder and lightening! And though it does inevitably end, it is followed by an equal sweet season: Fall.

In contrast to our spring, fall has to compare to summer, not just beat winter. And it usually does. If the heat starts to drain you, the cool fall afternoons make for perfect anything weather. A hoodie and some pants will clothe you perfectly for a day in the turning leaves and light breezes. The only bad part of fall is that it is one step closer to hell: Winter.

Regardless of what you have heard, winter is long, harsh, and soul crushing. Between the bitter cold, clogged roads, heavy shoveling, and boring days, you get a moment or two of beauty as snow falls silently in evenings. The minute the snow stops, reality strikes. The roar of snow blowers and the scraping of shovels reminds you that you are a prison in your house and your car is an ill-prepared sled hurrying you towards a crash. By mid winter, when the months drag along, you finally contemplate leaving. You think: "forget it, this is not worth it, winter gets worse every year!" You seem to forget the beauty of all the other seasons. You go for it. You make plans to leave. You make arrangements to change your life, to leave this horrible place.

It's at this point that Wisconsin deals its harshest and trickiest blow. Spring starts. The snow begins to melt. The grass begins to show through. The streets begin to clear. And the long process of starting a life somewhere else gets put on hold. You think: "Hey, this isn't so bad." You stick around thinking why miss the perfect summer that's about to start. And like that, Wisconsin has tricked you once again. You are hooked. You will love the summer. You will love the fall. You will stay through the year and not realize your mistake until the dead of winter once again chills you so deep you feel you will never be warm again. And it starts all over...

BUT, if you stay, you may be lucky enough to witness this rare Wisconsin event

I do love Wisconsin! A snowboard, snowblower, Jeep and a 5 year old son makes winter quite enjoyable these days too!

This was a good read, thanks Willy!

And so it is about the midwest. I live right by the Iowa/Nebraska border and every winter is just the same. Terrible
Although, if I moved away, I would miss the snow, and the way it makes a home feel. While it's dead and cold outside, inside is a warm, lively home. That's a feeling that wouldn't happen anywhere else, it's special here.

Although I am not from the Midwest, I have grown accustomed to the winter in just four short years. I would definitely miss it if I left.

I know the feeling, I'm on the Illinois/Wisconsin border, it's 5 degrees and windy right now.
Making chili as I type this, one of the winter pleasures ;D

Been riding my tw200 as long as the road is not snow or ice covered, not far but still
riding. BUT..... I stare in the shop at my Cagiva,Concours & Cafe and think about when I'll
be able to take them out. Late March or April maybe....Hurry Please!!!

Its a chilly 75 here right now and I'm in a T shirt and shorts. That's my idea of winter. I don't do cold very well.

The other day it was 52 out and that is what I was used to in Northern Cali for winter. I was in shorts that day. Heat wave!

It was 17 and blowing snow the yesterday and again today when i left for work @ 4:00 AM here in Cleveland. I am that person who every year says I'm going to leave this as soon as my kids finish college. But then Spring, summer and fall come and it's beautiful again... Still think I'll leave some day... if they ever finish school!

lol- in Columbus, OH and F'ing hate winter. Used to like it, but can't stand it now.

BUT, my awesome 80 old neighbor (owns a flooring store, is out of the house at 5:30AM and back at 1:30PM and maintains his mini-farm) across the street reminds me of two things when he sees me (I am a firm believer that people are put in your life for a reason):

1. "We are one day closer to Spring;"
2. "Life is all between your ears."

I always have to remind myself: "The grass is not greener on the other side."

;D

Neat piece. And I must say, as someone who suffers through the particularly enraging Western PA winters (17deg one day, 48 the next, snow, rain, wind, mudslides, ice storms, etc...) I want out. I want desert air, and dry Earth below my feet. A home town where I can put more miles on the chopper than on my truck every year. Have forever. Unfortunatly, Im married to a 6th generation Western PA family who has no intention of leaving. :/
