Respects to the original "Get out your crayons" thread...



Here's my canvas for designing bodywork and pipes for a SOHC CB750.

The first is a standard 1978 frame (77-78 have a 2 inch longer swingarm than 69-76).

Next is a frame with the mod to the rear uptubes that Benjie typically does, making the rear look lighter.

Both frames have 18 inch wheels, clipons above the triple clamps, double discs, a gauge in the headlight shell, and no rearsets or underseat tubes so you can customize them yourself. The shocks are also about 2 inches longer than stock, and the fork tubes have been slid up about 2 inches, lowering the front.

Here's a GS450 tank and matching cover over the back seat, with custom high pipes (2 on each side!)

Open the pics, and they get bigger!

What's everyone's take on the 4 high pipes?

I'd go all CR750 on it's ass.

A couple more:

One with a Guzzi style alloy tank from WBO or the tank shop, with matching alloy seat cowl (hey, if I'm customizing, I'm CUSTOMIZING!).

Another with a Rickman tank and matching seat cowl.
 
My new favorite!

Carpy's Dunstall tank with stock 69-76 pipes, and a removeable seat cowl.

What do you think?
 
This is member DME's CB750 - stretched stock tank. One of the nicest CB750's out there.

Thx for the respects :p Although this blows mine out of the water! What program are you using and how easy would it be to throw different tanks on that frame you made.

I used Powerpoint. Once I had the bike done without the tank, seat, and pipes (took a freaking while!), I can overlay the drawing on the image of another bike and trace the tank, seat, pipes, whatever from that bike. As long as it's a good side shot, and I know a measurement on the bike, (like the wheelbase, for example) I can make sure it's the right scale for my drawing.

I made the drawing of the frame from a good side shot of a naked CR750, and modified the swingarm to match my '78's, which is about 2 inches longer.

To answer your question, once I draw the tank, pipe, or whatever, I can easily paste it on or swap another one in its place. Once I draw an item that would be custom made and its dimensions decided by me, like a seat, seat cowl, or pipe, I can stretch it, taller, wider, rotate it, whatever. The cut and paste is good for checking the looks of the bike with a seat cowl on and off, and seeing what shape seat would fit under what shape seat cowl. I like trying different combinations of pipes, tanks, etc.

Since you're the originator, is there a tank or seat or something that you'd like to see on there?

I dig the CR tanks but have to wonder about the riding profile-looks like you'd have to ride laid out.

Yes, it's the CB750 flat tracker.

This was an idea I had for mine before my girlfriend decided she wanted to ride with me. I'll take a hot blonde behind me vs. a piece of plastic anyday (unless the blonde happens to be plastic! ;))
J/k-I like my birds stock-no aftermarket parts!

What's your riding scenario going to be? I think form should follow function in everything.

My biggest concern is a tank that'll hold at least 5 gallons. Currently I ride 240 miles a week (at least). I'm getting about 180 miles to the tank (before I switch to the res), so it's a consideration when I'm looking at aftermarket tanks.

How'd your hurricane sequesterment go? How did Austin fare? Not bad, I'm sure. I spent 7 years at Fort Hood until a few years ago, and I really loved it there.

We faired well. The rest of my family is in League City and they made it okay, other than lost power, phone service, and some knocked down fences. They were prepared for the worst, so they didn't have to rely on the aid trucks that came through.

Are you Army? My brother inlaw is stationed in Tikrit-helicopter crew chief/gunner-gets back in December.
 
I'm actually in Iraq right now, stationed out of Ft.Hood. From what I've heard back home, it passed fairly easily over that area, not much flooding, no major damage. Even one of my bikes faired the strong winds, rain storms, and panic people, and it was parked outside under a bike cover.

And Kev Nemo, what unit is he in, I'm 3d ACR, and we'll be heading back in Dec. Is he perhaps 4/3 ACR?

The design has taken a different turn.

Here's a CBR1000rr fork and CBR600 swingarm fitted, with black rims.

Ok.

I've decided to go with the modern suspension. I scored a front end from a CBR1000rr, complete with radial brakes and CBR954rr triples cheeeeeeeeeeeeappp on eBay. Now I've got to decide what to do about the swingarm and shocks so I can get the most out of some fat sticky modern radial rubber.

Here's a version with an old Ducati 900ss fairing, and converted to monoshock with bracing on the stock swingarm.

My recommendation would be to buy a decent sportbike swing-arm and shock. You will only have to worry about the pivot dimensions and an upper mount. As well, you'll be able to fit a much wider rear rim to suit your quest for modern rubber....
