Ok so I got board of looking at my finished Cafe Racer and just taking it to shows or the occasional bike night. So I decided to start riding it more ,on a loop about 20 miles, but I got board of that, so I started timing myself. I am calling it a Ghost Ride because this is not something I share with friends, I now have two loops and have really had a great summer with the bike. I now do my 20 mile loop on back roads in under 20 minutes. Over the winter I am looking at new wheels to improve handling and acceleration. When you think about it that’s what these bikes are ment for. Anyway tell us about your Ghost Ride
I like that idea and kind of do the same thing myself. I just moved into a new area and having been building up a nice loop through staring at google maps and intentionally getting lost. 20 miles seems a bit short tho, barely enough time to get that thing warmed up properly I would think! Make the route in google maps using the directions finder, then experiment with extending it. 20 minutes is fun, but an hour is so much better. And hell if its running good, why would you want to stop? You're absolutely right about these thing being made to ride, so do yourself a favor and stay in the saddle. Theres parts of my loop I like to go fast on and theres parts I just like to cruise and enjoy the scenery and the feeling of riding a 40 yr old bike.
another cool thing about google maps is that you can save the routes in "My Maps" that is linked to your google account and you can share it with anyone through email or on a website like this. Here's the loop me and a buddy just did over the weekend:
Yeah, now that would be fun Basement rat . Thanks Bobdot , I have lived in the same area for a long time, and ride on roads I grew up on. The 20 mile loop can be added two, but this is not about ridding with your friends, a Ghost ride may not be totally legal or for that matter safe. I mean I am not out to get hurt or kill myself, it is more a Zen thing for me. I try to use less braking, and try to take a better line every time I do it. This way it is not all up to twisting the throttle.
man you guys have some awesome roads... not much to add but a damper and fork brace will make a HUGE diff in the turns as well a bit thicker fork oil...
My "ghost ride" was in college mostly
every bike i built ran this road... i actaully rode it about 5 times a day on my XJ750 and CB750... was a blast... all fresh paved country road... only ever now and then there would be a farmer on his rig on it but that was few and far between... i mean this was a fast stretch and the final strait away was just awesome full of rolling hills that would make your stomach drop... every time i am back out that way I go out of my way to ride this cut of road... just awesome!!
around by me though i do not get to really rip i have my "get away" ride... so when i have a rough one, just need to cruise.. or the wife can not put up wiht me anymore... starts out with some fast moving highway so i can really open her up and let her sing, then goes into one lane to help me chill, though this small little town, then all country roads, into St charles a town on the fox river that is VERY biker friendly and just pretty cool to see, then up one of my fav local roads to my house... takes about 45 if i am really moving... but it is not a ride to rip on, just to enjoy, all brand new roads this year too thanks to the I-Dot improvement grant! THANK GOD we needed it!
I'm not posting the actual route... because then eeeeverybody is gonna be on it ;D
But it's almost exactly like Joes decription...
It starts out on a few miles of Interstate, then to a few miles of four lane hwy, then it runs through the swamps and sugarcane fields (that's the fun/twisty part), and eventually drops out on (the mighty Mississippi) River Road for lazy sweepers back towards the house. It's roughly 100 miles, and take a couple of hours.
We have some awesome roads here in southern Indiana from twisty county highways and backroads, cloverleafs, and a wicked highway spur with an amazing triple digit left and right hand sweepers. Probably the reason I'm such a nut for sportbikes. We have rides that can cover 200 miles or more. I am one tired mo-fo after one of those!
We have two hiway 59s (the magic number )
You can take AR59 south from I-412 to I-40, and its two hours of nasty twisty rollorcoaster curves and elevation changes. Then take I-40 west for a few miles and hit OK59 north, mostly high-speed sweepers and looooooong straight hills. ;D
You wind up about four miles west of where you started on 412, a half day well-spent ready for some good food and cold beer. 8)
Klickitat canyon and Beaver canyon, Skyline on the west end and a couple places i will also keep secret.
All roads I know inside and out, backward and forward.
Its about 100km in length and takes you out through some bloody fantastic scenery, with great riding roads and very little traffic. Mostly just farmland or good old Aussie bush. On the way back from Crookwell there is an awesome set of twisties that goes past a windfarm, love that area!
