Glass packing a muffler - How to?

SrgtBear

The arsenic has oddly shaped feet...
I have 2 Emgo Shorty Reverse Cone Mufflers. A little too loud for my liking. Anyone experienced with fiberglass packing mufflers? I never tried it so I need some points, tips, or suggestions on how to do it properly. Thanks.

I did this to mine. It's easy.

buy some expanded metal from Lowes. Using tin snips, cut it roughly where you need it. Not too small. wrap and zip tie it around a spray paint can to get the rough shape. Also from lowes get the fiberglass insulation they sell in a small pouch for stuffin in around outlets and things. Wear gloves and it's best to put baby powder on your exposed skin pretty heavily. (keeps you from itching later). Unroll and rough cut the fiberglass to your needs.
Remove the sip ties from the expanded metal and roll it up so it will slide into your muffler. Make sure it's not too long. Too short is better for the length in this case. Roll it up a little smaller diameter than you need for you muffler. then wrap the fiberglass around it. Slide it into your muffler and put the cap back on and your finished.

On my 360 I installed from take off mufflers from a thruxton 900. they were way too loud. When i did this mod i noticed that they only came with about 4 inches for fiberglass.

If you use a product that isn't meant for packing mufflers you will be disappointed at the length of time it takes to blow it all out. Buy some good muffler packing from a motorcycle shop and follow the directions. Wrap the packing as tight as possible before you re-insert the core in the muffler.

the fiberglass at lowes is the same stuff they sell @ bike shops. I've got several hundred miles on mine and it has not degraded at all. If it does, it's $4 for a roll I used less than 20% of. I still have some.

They look the same as the ones I have. Ebay special?
The baffles in them are shit and really small. I did this to mine. Takes some time though....
The fibreglass packing is from the local bike accessory store and a bit of pipe I had laying around.
Left the baffle that was was in there and simply put it up the end. Been working good so far :) P.s the tape stinks for awhile but it goes away :p

Neither. Made a whole new baffle :)
If they are the same as mine they should have a little bit of a baffle in the end.
I simply got another peice of pipe did the above to it and put it in the end. One end of the new pipe is up against the crosspiece in the old baffle and it is held in by the packing as I jammed as much as I could up there :)

i think your right about the short baffle. that's probably why they sound so loud then. It's not a bad loud but annoying at idle and long rides. I'll take a look and see what I can fab up between a new baffle and packing. fingers-crossed. Gotta love and hate those ebay specials.

So, I had the same exact problem when I put the same muffler on my cb125. Its a pretty simple process to repack and it cut down on the harsh extra loud noise. The bike is still kind of loud, but not obnoxiously.

Remove the screws holding the cap on.

Pull the baffle out. I had to get a hammer and screwdriver and tap the baffle from the other end to loosen it up.

Marvel at how little packing Emgo actually put in the muffler...

If you haven't done so already, head to your local bike shop and get some fiberglass packing. Cut it to length, then wrap it around the baffle, but don't put a ton in. I think I juust overlapped the fiberglass a little bit on mine.

Finally, wrap it in some wire to hold it in place.

Re-install the baffle, then the muffler tip.

Get out and ride!

Yikes! Yup that's the same exhaust. Emgo. Damn that doesn't look like much packing. Thanks for this pics. Now I know exactly what I need to do. :)
