gs450 spark issue

Hello everyone. Ive encountered a problem with my 81suzuki gs450. No spark, like everyone else in the world. Here's my diagnosis so far. With both coils unplugged I check for power. With the key on I have constant power through my o/w (orange with white stripe) wires. I check for grounds. My ground to the right coil pulsates when I crank the motor. The ground for the left coil is not present when cranking. But when I turn the key off I all of a sudden have a ground at the left coil wire. (White wire) To me this tells me my cdi is not sending the correct pulses to the coils. Has anyone else encountered this?

The ignitors can be weak on these bikes and they do go out. That's why youll notice a lot of GS450's will be missing their ignitor.

Just wondering what you ended up replacing. I bought a project 450e and the owner before me did not really know much about the bike. I also am going to be doing crazy amounts of research to see what modern parts or different model parts can be retro-fitted to decrease the likely hood of common problems like the one you had.

Replacing the Regulator/rectifier with something better on these is a must.

The tiny OEM R/Rs make your battery overcharche kills it. Takes out the stator at the same time.

Thanks man, I really want to modernize the electrical system. I dont want to worry about this if I am far away from home. I have NO support structure in life, no family... I work nights.. got like the same 6 friends since I was in highschool. I would be SOL if I got stuck a few hundred miles away because of a commonly known electrical issue I could have fixed.

register on thegsresouces.com and read the stator papers.

Basically replace the R/R and the stator itself if need be
