Gsxr front swap

I started with a GSXR 600 rear shock for $16.00. I'll have to dump about another $300 into it for re-valving and a new spring maybe even a longer shaft. So that's $316 right there, throw in the $100 front end + axle then new springs, oil, possible new damping at about another $150 to $200. So what started out as a $116 venture can possibly more than triple in costs. Now my original forks were totally rusted and I chose to dump the rusted rear twin shock setup but you can see how it escalates. I forgot to mention the new front and rear calipers to go along with the rest of it. I'm not trying to discourage you but just bring up what it might take to pull it off. It sounds like you want the bike to work well so I'm sure you'll do the research. I just don't want to be on pins and needles begging my bike to turn in the turns and stay straight in the straights.

I like this as well, again, not entirely opposed to that. After all, the bike was bought as a $600 project. now that it's running well, I'm not oppsed to spending money on it. If I can buy a front end for 500-600 drop another 3-500 into it and actually get to do the work and have it ride the same as the 2500 option then all is well.

So would there be an issue with just buying the cognito moto one? What makes that product so much better vs buying and rebuilding myself (outside of more experience). I've rebuilt shocks on mountain bikes

I paid about $300 and change for the one in my avatar, and I am now shamefully about $4000 >< all in. Zero regret.

there are two more common approaches to the front end swap

Option 1:

cognito's triple trees are like $750 for ones corrected for geometry. His hub is $330. his stem is $120. hub spacers are $36.

then you'll be about $100 in bearings from allballsracing for steering stem and wheel bearings. Then spokes and rim if you're not going to re-use what you have laced to the cognito hub.

Option 2:

There's a member here making raw triple trees for about $400 for a top and bottom. you can have them set up to use the stock stem, but you'd have to grind the weld off the lower tripl to press the stem out, and press the stem into the new triple.

from here you can do the cognito hub, or have a custom axle and spacers set made up at a machine shop along with a pair of rotor adapters to get the modern rotors on your stock front wheel as-is. At this stage of the game it comes down to cost, as it might be just as expensive to have a machine shop make up the adapters as it would cost to just buy the cognito hub. This is the option that makes sense for those people with access to a lathe to make their own parts so the expense is just raw aluminum.

the GSXR forks will be an upgade in handling AND braking if done within the correct geometry. A couple simple measurements and this calculator will get you rough geometry calculations.

you can use a magnetic angle finder on the neck with stock forks mounted and the rest can be done with a good tape measure and set of verniers to punch in your numbers.

for example, I've recently done this for a 1981 cb750....

I measured neck angle at 27.5*

fork length at 31"

and offset at 2.25" (IIRC, fuzzy on this one)

anyway....no triple tree rake on these bikes....so punching that all in gives trail of 4.12

a gsxr is going to be I think 27-28" long fork with 1.25-1.5" offset. if you keep the stock wheel/tire.....those numbers get you a trail calc of 5-5.25 which is pretty much junk for steering feel/feedback on these bikes. 4-4.5 is pretty much perfect.

As far as rotors, 95 - 96 YZF600R rotors are a direct bolt on 300mm rotor with just a slightly larger (4mm) center hole. You're looking for a 6 x 80mm bolt pattern to match the CB750 hubs. There are also several 298mm options with the same bolt pattern- FZR600, FJ1200 and TDM850 are examples.

The bold portion above is me. I can do trees in any offset and spread you need, with a bunch of designs available. I will need a usable stem though as already mentioned. PM me if you are interested.
