GT250. Cafe racer build

patak

The more people i meet, the more i like my dog
G,day all, thought i would join in the fun and throw up a build of my bike. This is my first time so be gentle :). Bought this GT a couple of months ago and it came with a parts bike, the parts bike still has matching numbers so am going to move all the good bits over to it. Have only just started pulling it apart, am just chasing down some rearsets so i can get them mounted put on a rear loop detab then get the frame powdercoated. Any hoo here are some pics.

Wow, man, that red frame isn't stock...

lol, naa the PO was half way through building this bike, got alot of parts rechromed and painted the frame with the worst paint i have seen, can scrach it off with my finger nail. Painted the carbys the same red........

Did a little more this weekend, despoked the rims and started giving one of them a little polish looks like it will come up alright. Also saw my father over the weekend and he draged out a box of old T20 bits he had in the shed and came up with a nice head light, speedo, taco i put together out of the bits. Will be mounting this on the bike for sure, looks better than the original GT cluster.

Cheers

So came across a few problems that i need to over come (was waiting for them :) ). I new i was going to need to put on longer rear shocks to because of the room i was going to lose by puting electrices under the seat. What i did not think about was that it get in the way of the standard pipes . Could be a good thing though maybe time to look at getting a set of expansion chambers ;D. If anyone has any advice on what to get / not to get would be helpful, have done a bit of looking around and can get a set of jemcos deliverd to AUS for $500. Also bought a set of rearsets i need to get mounted up.

Well a little update on my bike, got a little sidetracked with a new baby. Got the rear loop and tagged it on with the worst bit of welding to be done in the last 100 years:). Also made up my fiberglass seat, was my first time FG so it turned out a little rough but i think i can make it work. Next on the hit list is a set of pipes and to mount up my rear sets, also some polishing of my aluminium hubs and engine cases.

Kool I've got away with rd350 chambers on these bikes befor you need to cut up your down pipe to mod the chamber but it pretty self explanatory looks good so far

Well been awhile since i have had anything to add to this build, wife decided to have a baby ( still don't know how that happened ;D ). So time has not been as easy to come across. I did get a set of chambers from JEMCO just need to get them welded up, also started to mount up my rearsets. The first time i mounted my rearsets would have worked but looked like they stuck out to far, but the second time looked better. I did get set back quite a bit after working out my frame was bent . So had to drag my other frame from under the bench and start all the work i had done again, but my own bad for not checking before i started. I do have one question about my resets, the piece of metal i have welded on the frame does it look big enough? or should i put a bigger piece on to get more strength, any comments appreciated.

I've been looking for a combo tach/speedo for my build. That's even a Suzuki part!

Time to hunt one down...

It has been awhile since i have updated this build. Got a little side tracked with someone wanting to park there car in our front yard, they just had to drive though our brick wall to do. Know one was to badly injured.

Have made a little progress with the bike.

Respoked my wheels with new spokes and painted the hubs, was going to polish the hubs but thought it would be to much of a pain to get in and around all the spokes to keep it polished so paint one out in the end. Used VHT engine enamel then baked in the oven, seem good now but will have to wait and see what it is like once i am riding it.
Did try to true the wheels myself but failed miserably, so it was off to Ash's spoked wheels in brisbane who does great work.

Made up a couple of brackets to mount my rearsets onto, with know real metal work skills i think they turned out OK, just took an ass load of time to shape.

Also polished up my original handle bar switches. Had to take all the old paint off, then sand, then polish. Very happy with the way they turned out.

Anyway some pics Cheers

It is still ongoing, it just had to be put one side for a while with kids, bills, wife and life.

Also have been saving my little pennies for a alloy TR250 tank...... not to far off now.

Once i have that i will start to mount everything where it is meant to go and hope for the best :)

Cheers
