Hand signals... why are people retarded?

Coast to Coast
Is it just me, or do 90% of people on the roads have no clue at all what hand signals mean? I get honked at at least twice every time i go out for a ride... I dont have turn signals on one of my bikes, but i ALWAYS use hand signals when im making turns. Either people give me a lot of room because theyre confused as hell as to what im doing, or they get frustrated and ride my ass and honk at me like im doing something wrong, like youre only allowed to make a turn with flashing signals, if you dont have them, youre only allowed to go straight...

I even double checked because this happens so often that i considered the fact that maybe my hand signals were wrong, but they arent... As far as i remember hand signals were on the driving test... how did these people even get licences??

that is the only reason i'm putting turn signals on my bike. I know out of my friends that don't ride, and don't want to, not one of them would know what a hand signal meant. More than likely they'd just wave at the biker with a confused look on their face.

I sometimes feel like people don't know the "proper" hand signal meanings where left hand down means slow/stop, left is left, and left up is right. So I just stick my hand out which ever direction I'm turning. It gives me a feeling that maybe others may understand it more?

people are in fact retarded. especially if your in a major city... wouldn't be the first time I've gotten within inches of beaten the hell out of a cage driver for cutting me off when it was absolutely my right.

ride defensively always, and always have the thought that everyone wants to kill you.

There's also the theory that if you ride at near infinite speed, everyone else is theoretically at a stand still, frozen in time and... no, wait. That's the japanese whisky talking.

Yah, what Rocan said, ride defensively!

I learned hand signals when I was learning to ride a bicycle! But, you're right. People are idiots. Bicyclists don't even use proper handsignals when they do signal, they point in the direction they are planning on turning. I have had to use hand signals while driving my cage when I had a bulb go out. Would help if cops would enforce the signal laws as well.

Hand signaling is thought in motorcycle driving school or if you are a rider you learn from expiernce. Most common car driving don't know squat about the rules of the road, improper lane change, no turn signal, no complete stops etc.... Motorcyclist don't get the respect from car drivers, it's you vs the car. That is one of my biggest fear when riding.

i feel nobody really knows proper handsignals, so the best thing to do is make your point. The point being, that whatever you're going to do, you want the drivers behind you to notice, so I have found that a look and a vigorous wave do the trick. I give a little blip of throttle, and wave my left arm a bunch regardless of where I'm going to turn. All I want to do is make sure the person behind me notices and a static arm signal does not work. People can lull into only noticing movement, so move a bunch.

Never trust a cager. Never go when they motion you through a 4-way. Never ride the right side or center of your lane. Look those fuckers in the eye and make sure they see you looking at them. Hell, I'll look over my shoulder at someone behind me if I notice they're driving weird. Stay away from the pack! Depending on the behavior of drivers, I will sometimes use hand signals along with my flashers...

I get waved at almost every time I turn right. I used to chuckle about it but nowadays it makes me fuckin angry thinking that so many people can't comprehend simple sign language.

Are guys riding without turn signals? I don't know law in your state, but will take a wild guess that most states require full DOT lights. Now if you remove the lights for fashion, other drivers may not be able to see you or even risk to be ticketed. Either way be safe out there.

I doubt most states require full lights. During daylight hours we're legal with just hand signals in Washington.

Even so, it's not a bad idea to use lights and hand signals.

no turn sigs on my bike, just a headlight and tailight. I use hand signals, or wildly shake a fist for attention. I have no idea about other states, but Florida is pretty wild west about traffic laws. I don't really have a complaint here since nobody signals, cars or bikes here, they just dart wherever they want just as I do. It may not be the safest method of travel, but it's the way it is here.

that's how I felt when I first moved here. It's a double edge sword to because you feel like you can get away with a lot more, but it's also scarier, and you gotta remember there are laws when you visit other places. A large portion of the population where I live are fresh off the boat from third world countries where the only traffic laws are just backwards from convention. The best defense is a good offense in this case I guess.

Add another "people are retarded". I use hand signals when I'm on the DS7, and OEM signals when I'm on the Hayabusa. Most people ignore both. And after 25+ years of riding, I never take for granted that any cager has seen and/or acknowledged either signal. I always ride defensively.
Hell, I get people that ignore the signals on my tractor/trailer all the time, and there's FIVE flashing lights down the side of that fucker!

Now, having said all that. This is amusing...
Motorcycle hand signals.

haha that video is pretty awesome and i agree with the gallery here. i live in SC where people are just assumed to be retarded if they are in a car. when i turn right, i use my left hand, while pointing my finger right, while giving a wave of the arm. when i finally point i can see peoples faces in my mirror like "ooooohhh he's turning right... i get it" dumbasses.
