So I bought the DCC mini speedo with the indicator lights. (Love the way that thing looks by the way.) Anyways. I was going for simplicity so I removed the tach and factory speedo. To center up the guage I drilled the top triple and mounted the guage there. I've been doing some rewiring so all of this was done with the headlight bucket off. So today I go to button it all up and realize that the speedo cable will screw into the back of the guage, but the angle is pretty harsh. Like REALLY harsh. So my question is this, can that cable be run through the bucket? Would it be unthinkable to route in through the bottom, and run it through a drilled hole in the top to the safely of its awaiting speedometer counterpart? Of course for waterproofing reason I would grommet the top hole. What do you guys think?
Any wiring in the bucket should be fairly water resistant to begin with. Even the back of the headlight bulb can handle a little moisture with no issues. Just make sure there is dielectric grease where there should be, and add a grommet like you said.
Fwiw, I ran a cable thru a drilled bucket before with no issues. But I didn't ride that bike in any torrential downpours either.
Thanks guys. I couldn't forsee why it would be a problem to route it that way, but then again I didn't forsee these issues to begin with...Plus I don't plan on riding in the rain. Although the rain hardly ever asks my opinion before it cuts loose...
They run them through the tank on bikes with speedos mounted in the center of the tank like most harleys, vulcans, etc. The headlight bucket is just as weatherproof as the tank mounted speedos and there is nothing but a big hole in the bottom center of the tank where the cable comes through. Benjis also makes a bucket specifically for that. If I remember correctly there is a member on here that has the Benji headlight bucket but I can't remember who...
Has anyone ever run a speedo cable through a headlight bucket?
I'm using this in my build now. I had the same idea as you to clean up the bars. In the end I still felt there was too much clutter. So decided to move gauge into the light bucket.

Most Harleys have split tanks that run the speedo in a dash on top and the cable/wiring goes between the tank halves. The cable does not go through the tank.
That Carpy's head light is so over priced and what was interesting is if you order it without the $50 speedometer they knock a whole $20 off it.

Ouch man. That sucks. If it makes you feel any better I just bricked my $150 Lithium battery by leaving the ignition on for 2 days straight. Its holding 2 volts...after charging...
So do they sell replacement lenses?
