equal length means that both pipes resonate at the same revs and will theoretically acheive max torque at that RPM. In the real world we need a wider powerband. Unequal headers mean that both cylinders peak at slightly different times, so making the powerband wider.
In reality you would be lucky to measure the difference let alone feel it. Are intake lengths optimized, will you be using latest technology exhaust canister design? NO? well I don't think a few inches difference in header length will be a big deal. Do what works and looks right.
Back in the day BSA fitted the GGS (rocket Gold Star with siamesed pipes (that's two into one in new speak) and lengths were far fro the same. Everyone praised the bike for the fat torque curve.
