Help with painting options for tank.

Well I've been calling around to local painters and they all seem to want at least $300 to shoot my tank gloss black. This is with me delivering a primed piece ready to shoot. This is more than I am willing to spend, specially since last time I did a bike a painter where I used to live shot my tank for $60. On the rest of the bike I've been using black epoxy paint that I've heard will hold up to gas. With some color sanding do you guys think that would come out ok on the tank? My biggest concern is how this will stick to primer since I will need to fill a few small dings. What about Rustoleum enamel?

ehhhh.. Id just sand the entire tank down to the metal, polish it then cleat coat...

I'd love to polish the tank, unfortunatly it has a few small dents that would probably need bondo. I just saw a tank here that had the knee dents polished while the rest was painted. I might be able to pull that off. Does clear have any issue sticking to polished steel? I would think it'd chip easily because the surface is soo smooth.

YES!

It has a hell of a problem sticking even to sanded steel... it doesn't stick, at all. Por 15 makes a product called Crystal PC... or Glisten PC that has promise, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

you can always powder it clear as well but have them use a 150% gloss... any clear will dull the shine a bit but the 150% is the best i have found... good coverage and baking will help it to adhear and seal the metal in

You should go to a local body shop, the smaller the better. Ask to talk to the owner and ask him if next time they paint a black car they could throw your tank in the booth with it..... A lot of times theyll do it for next to nothin.
