Hey, new to cafés

Hello, names Chris just recently purchased a 1979 cb750k DOHC 10th anniversary edition, got a great bike to start with and am going to be ready to start tearing down soon. Don't know much about them to tell you the truth, I'm actually a Harley guy but have always had a love for cafe racers! I know I want to go for the hidden battery and wires clean and open look, maybe a modern front end, dual front disc brakes, clip ons, new tank and seat, etc....

Wow, that bike is nice. I would think twice about tearing that down. You will surely lose money in the end. That bike in the distant future (esp with that mileage) will be worth something to the right buyer.

Also... one of my dreams is to have a go at building a Sportster café racer. I have seen some amazing examples around the net.

Not really even thinking about making money off of it, I got it for a great price and just looking to build an awesome toy. And yeah those sportsters are pretty sweet, may be a future project depending on how this one goes!
 
By the way.. welcome to the site. I am quite new here too.. great crowd here. SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE. Just not in my head!

That bike is so clean. Boring by looks, sure, but 750s put out some solid power.

Yeah it sure does especially considering it's 35 year old technology!

I don't believe there will be any crossing over from My Harley though lol but it will be a great bar hopper eventually!

I wasn't trying to be rude. It is very boring and I would want to do the same thing. I would just have a hard time doing it to such a mint bike.
 
W0w that is a real clean start point 8) wot i would do is get a supply of beer :p lock yerself in ya garage wiv a cd of workshop noises ::) then in summer just wheel that baby out everyone will think you da man ;D job done haha jokin of course ;) welcome in mate now start tearing it down :eek: make it ya own
 
Thanks yorkie350, it should be a fun project, still milling around ideas on what direction I want to go, will post when I get back home off the road and start at it!
 
Awesome bike. I would have to be a few beers deep before I started tearing it down...but you definitely gotta make it your own!
 
OK, I am all for customizing bikes, lord knows mine are FAR from stock... But that LTD with only 5K miles and what looks to be exceptionaly clean is worth a pretty penny in the DOHC CB750 circles. You might be really surprised. Shit, just the tank and side covers with original paint are worth more than most complete projects here are bought for.
But it is YOUR BIKE.... I'm just saying You can do a lot to change it without cutting anything. Mine can be returned to stock in no time if the value is ever there for a lowly C model. ::)
 
Nice shiny bike. If I were you I'd just ride the thing this riding season and get to know it. Decide what works for you and what needs to be changed - if anything. Most changes can be made on the fly over a wet weekend. Al the "make it your own" and "cut it up" are just nonsense. The nicest bikes I ever had stayed more or less stock. I swapped out seats and pipes and changed riding positions etc as it slowly morphed but never far from stock.

As soon as it gets chopped it's basically worth less that stock unless it is an exceptional and inspired design flawlessly executed. And leave the beers for social occasions. Beer and motorcycles never work well in combination.

When you start thinking about a "look" search on line for what other have done with that platform. Read up on what's good about the bike and not so good. Do as many design sketches as you want and then give them a reality check. I just print out pics of my bike and use pens or sharpies but you can do that with photoshop or whatever digital tools you are good with, but take the time to work out where you are going so you have a vision and a plan on how to realize that vision. Many of the details will have to be worked out as you go and sometimes that creates changes in direction, but start with a plan and "make it your own" is a call from the crowd, not a design or build concept.

I have been riding and building bikes since the xxxxxies - we don't need to go there do we? :) Some were stock, many were racers and some were cafe racers. If I start with a pile of crap, I don't mind cutting it up and changing it radically. I just hate to ruin a perfectly good motorcycle.

Have fun with it, whatever you end up doing.

I was thinking the same thing. I dont want to sound like a dbag trying to tell other people what to do with thier own bikes, but like Hoosier Daddy said regardless on what you paid for this beaut I'm sure you could make some significant $ from selling and purchashing a common 750 with $ left over to buy plenty of project parts. Just the cheap old man in me speaking out loud. Either way this is an awesome find and if you decide to make it your own it will be one hell of a bike! Goodluck!

Just was joking trying to nicely say I would have to be under the influence before I started changing such a beautiful bike to begin with...but thanks for the PSA! ;)
 
No worries mate. :) It's just that people tend to get caught up in the myths.
