High Pipes

Hi All:

Kanticoy order a set of bespoke MotoFiaccone pipes for his CB360 project. I'm borrowing the DropBars LoudBike for a few weeks to build the pipes and had an idea: I have enough material in stock to make some CL-style high pipes in 304 stainless. So the options are:

1.) Build some high pipes for a CB/CL350
2.) Build some high pipes for a CB/CL360

So what bike would you guys prefer? It's basically going to look very similar to a stock set of CL pipes, though in true MF-style, far less ornate.

My thought is the pipes will sell in the $300-$350 range, depending on the number of bends I use. This is about the going price for a nice set of chrome pipes on eBay. Mine will be the real deal. I'm going to make the pipes one way or another; I'm just trying trying to feel out what bikes people are using.

--Thanks, Chris

im gonna be in need of a set for a cb450.....its really hard to find high mounts for it. call me crazy but i kinda want a set of pipes in titanium with no mufflers 2-1 with a titanium megaphone at the end

I've looked into Ti for my own personal exhaust. I can weld up a system no problem. The trouble is in sourcing Ti mandrel bends. They are very expensive--if the can be found. They're basically custom bends and there is a high setup charge. There is also a lot of material yield because bending Ti is hit or miss. That's why bespoke Ti exhaust systems are often made with a series of cuts.

If you're serious about the project, PM me. But I think the material cost alone will approach $1k. Nevermind the large amount of my time (read expensive) it will take to fab a full Ti system.

You know what I would pick chris!

I ran a set of stock high pipes on my last cb360 and loved them. My complaints were: too heavy and too loud! They were open pipes. I always thought those would rock with a set of small mufflers or some sort of internal baffling. Can't wait to see what you come up with. On both fronts!

Since you're going to be working on your brothers bike again....prime opportunity!

what do you think itd cost me to do some 2-2 high pipes for a cb450 in stainless? i will do titanium eventually but i dont think i will off the bat because i wanna make sure i like them before i invest that much $$$

They would be a little bit more than the price I quoted above, but there would be quite the lead time. PM me for the details.

So what do you think gents: CB350 or CB360? I'm not holding you to an order, I'm just looking for comments like, "I think a CB360 has a better following at the time."

I think they both have a great following here. You'd do well going either way with them. The 360s are becoming pretty popular lately for some reason. SS high pipes are where it's at for the aftermarket following. Just the stockers go for $100 on eBay. I vote 360 but that's just because I'm biased! ;)

I would actually think about reselling my stock CL pipes on ebay depending on how these turn out. Not that I think theyll turn out bad, but they might not really jive with my vision, yanoe? Also availability of funds is shaky. Anyways my bikes a cb350.

Btw would it be possible to build dual sided high pipes? Like instead of the right cylinder swooping around to the left side, it went to the right and up for a symmetrical system. I really wanted to build a system like this, but I settled for ebaying cl pipes since I dont have the know how or tools to get the job done.

I am a big motor guy myself (four cylinders), but I think the 360 is the more desirable bike!
But what do I know, I like fat bikes!

Yeah, I'd say do both. I mean come on, you have all of the time in the world right? :) There seems to be about an even split of 350s and 360s on here and bet you could sell enough of both. I was actually wondering when you were going to do this for the 350.

T'would depend entirely on the rest of the system.....muffled or not?
If you can reproduce the amount of backpressure supplied by the OEM pipes....probably not. If you're end product flows more freely or gods forbid.....more restricted......then you'll need to rejet.

Why would anyone want titanium pipes aside from the bling factor?

Its hard to cut, hard to bend (unless you have the right tools) very hard to bend and retain its shape (if its sheet metal) and brittle compared to anything else... Welding has to be stupid clean with tons of back up gas.

Why not go for an aluminum exhaust to save weight?

$350 aint bad for a "custom" system regardless, I paid around that for my POS bbk one.

titanium? huh? Aluminum exhaust? huh?

Whats your turnaround time on your custom pipes chris?

Im hearing a lot of comments throught the grape vine that its taking you much longer to make them past your orginal time estimates and its not actually coming all complete as promised...

In all our dealings with Chris delivery times have been stellar...

And FWIW, his work is like art. There's nothing like it.

It's a lot lighter and changes the resonance in exhaust system (the point where max power is delivered)
It also has a lot higher heat capability without melting or burning through, plus corrosion resistance.
An aluminium exhaust also changes resonance but would burn through at first bend pretty quick unless it was water cooled, (as on PWC)
