i just rebuilt my 77 honda 400 to near perfection but i am having trouble getting her strait.I put the motor all the way together but now she runs super fat, and blubbers black smoke, i tore it down to find nothing wrong, is it possible that i 180'd the cam? and how can i tell which is the right way to install the cam? im using a climer manual and its very limited in this area. and response would help! im trying to get it done by 2 am tonight so i can ride the bike to mt. shasta tomorrow!!
thanks all
ps the bike is put together all stock, carbs worked fine before tear down. reason for rebuild was for reliabilty and a famous siezed cam tensioner...that is fixed=)
It wouldn't fire at all if the cam were 180 out. Is it for sure black smoke? As in burnt fuel? It should be charring the plugs with soot if it is the fuel. Did you change jets?
There are the two marks on the cam chain sprocket that is attached to the cam chain. Those marks should line up with the head when the crank is turned to the "T" mark.
These lines are supposed to be lined up with the top of the cylinder when the T is lined up with the timing mark. Here the mark appears to be about one tooth off. Its pretty easy to adjust by just pulling the chain off the sprocket and moving it forward one tooth.
thanks so much man. i just put the motor together and i still have the same problem that i did after the rebuild the first time i put the motor back together. its like being punched in the stomache. im so attached to this project and im going to spend all my free time trying to figure this out. the bike runs, but so doggy. smokes due to unburnt fuel. it fires on all cylinders. timing is spot on. carbs are all good. i used a versah gasket set for the rebuild. i also ordered new standard rings from an outfit in canada. they fit pretty tight but still had 0.07 clearance so i knew they didnt need to be filed. i didnt mess with the points. i didnt split the cases on rebuild. didnt mess with any wiring. the bike ran perfectly before teardown. the reason for rebuild was due to the bike having frozen rings and a siezed cam chain tensioner. i fixed the tensioner and installed new rings and put it back together the exact same way it came apart. i keep going over the build in my head but i cant think of anything i missed. no left over bolts etc haha.
one question i do have is the pistons have the letter "in" on top of them, which intails that would be the intake direction right?
