Honda CB Question

So Ive found a Honda CB for sale at a good deal. But it needs a timing chain and a valve adjustment.
Ive never worked on a motorcycle before. Do have some experience working on vehicles though.
How hard are these tasks? How expensive would it be to get it fixed at a shop? I plan on building it into a cafe racer so Im not concerned with having tear it apart. 1980 year model.

Valve adjustment is fairly straight forward and most people can do one to factory specs with just a little instruction. Chain will be a bit trickier.

Shop will probably charge around $400 for this work.

Definitely doable.

I think you can do it with the engine out and valve covers off, but if I'm wrong it's a full engine disassemble.

I had planned on disassembling it anyway. Since this is my first project bike I had planned to learn as much as I can.

Time Ive definitely got. Ive got 45 days of leave and Im gonna need something to keep me from going crazy.

1980 is a dohc.
Two chains. Exhaust chain is easy as it comes off the intake cam.
Intake cam comes off the crankshaft.
The valve adjustment is also not the easiest on these engines.

I suggest you get a manual and read up.

This requires engine removal from the frame. It weighs a metric ton.
I used a regular auto engine stand to rebuild my engine which made it a LOT easier.

If you are handy & have lots of tools, you can do this, though.

That engine weighs in at 215 lbs. (Trust me, it feels heavier) Hope you ate your wheaties. A good service manual, some good pdf files and some internet walk-throughs and you can do it.

revhedgl is right, could be done with a new master link.
I think that is tough for a part-timer.

If you are building the bike, might was well pull the lump and do it outside the frame.

Good luck whichever method you use,

cheers,
brad
