How Do I Remove Flaking/Peeling Clear Coat on Clutch Cover

Couple questions. What's the best way to get rid of the old clear coat in the clutch cover? The aluminum is in great shape, but the peeling clear needs to either be replaced or stay off. Someone suggested brushing carb cleaner.

Also, what type of clear coat should I put back on there, do I even need to put it back on? Thanks.

If they sell "gasket remover" in a spray can at your local auto parts store (I can no longer find it here in CA) then I highly recommend it. It's cheap and it works great. Other than that I've used sprayable paint remover and it worked pretty good. I've also removed it mechanically and I have to say that paint remover requires much less polishing after the fact.

This is the best over the counter paint/powder coating stripper I have found. Safe to the metal but easily remove the coating. Home Depot carries it for under $7.00.

We may have been discussing the B17 chemical stripper that I have scars from which is a really nasty stripper and why I stated the KleenStrip as over the counter. Common sense says to tell you to read all precautionary labels and respect them.

And if that fails, remember how much it hurt the first time ;)

I had a bicycle frame I had just removed from the tank and had it hanging when I reached down to get something else out of the tank. A drop dripped from the frame onto my arm and I hit the hose in less than 20 seconds and washed it off. This is what it looked like the next day.

This was 2 years later and the way t still looks today.

This is the best stripper I have found "over the counter"... beats any of the other "Klean-Strip" products hands down. Honda clear coat on the aluminum engine covers started blistering almost immediately. Available at any auto-parts store around here.

The KleanStrip Aircraft Paint Remover and the KleanStrip Stripper are basically the same product. I find the ease of the aerosol to be much easier to work with than the brush on paste.
The active ingredient is Methylene Chloride. The stuff that burned my arm is straight liquid Methylene Chloride

Holy crap, Marc. I used the aerosol too. I used a brush to clean the paint off of my tank and every once in a while a glob would fly off the brush on to my leg. It would start to burn immediately. Not to mention it eats right through nitrile...

Greyson, what you used is child's play compared to what dripped on me. The active ingredient in the aircraft strippers is Methylene chloride mixed with out ingredients. The B17 is straight liquid MethChlor, industrial strength. It'll strip 3 coats of cured powder coating in less than 10 minutes.
Use neoprene gloves. Nitrile, latex, PVC glove are gone in seconds in this stuff.

agreed we have a huge vat of B17 it is mean stuff, weird that it does not touch rubber though hell even some adhesives and stickers will fly right though it with no issues then other stuff just melts away. also has to be hazmat disposted of. I hate chemical day when we have to change that out. mean mean stuff, but we keep an eyewash station, chemical shower, and sink right there just for that reason
