how to create rust?

im lookin to do a military theme and want my frame to look rusted. can this be achieved with paint, or even the real deal with some natural patina and clear coat? thank you

those aren't flamethrowers, they're weeny roasters, notice no windows so you can get the weeny stick right through

muriatic acid. not too much. it rots metal like nobody's business. i use it to relic guitar parts. first, you scratch it up a bit, roughen it with sandpaper, then brush on a little acid, leave it for a few minutes, rinse in a water and soda solution to neutralize the acid, and you're done.

I like the idea of the patina but the military is religious about paint so really patina isn't their thing. Had to bust your balls a bit. post some pics of what you come up with.

haha, thats cool man. i have this "vision" in my head of wwII military crossed wtih post apocalyptic warefare. we will see how this goes. first bike, first big project. things might change, but thats the vision for now.
