I cant remember what I bought last year but it was a chemical from home depot,it worked really well its just surface rust.Anybody

Some toilet bowl cleaners have rust removing capabilities. Have you searched the site for this yet? You might find a few threads discussing different techniques and chemicals for doing this.

I'm using MEK to (hopefully) take off an old coating right now as I type. I've heard muriatic acid works well too. Then I'll finish removing the rust the old school way - filling the tank with some BBs and bolts and shaking her really well.

don't know how many times I have to suggest POR-15 fuel tank kits, I swear its amazing stuff.
they should start paying me for all my recommendations ;]

But the metal ready and tank sealer works wonders and the metal ready isn't acid based so you can get it all over your skin with no worries

I used muriatic acid concentrate for my pool. It cleaned it super well and fast diluted it with water just don't breath or touch it. It's nasty stuff

POR-15 makes some good stuff. I've used their tank lining kit in the past. WAY better than Kreem in my opinion.

If it's just light rust you could probably get away with their cleaning solutions and skip the 'liner'. Google it and you'll find how to buy it.

It probably goes without saying, but make sure you remove your petcock when cleaning rust with chemicals and/or acids. Aluminum is very reactive.

The best cleaner is a dilute phosphoric acid, its what's used in nearly all commercial rust removers but of course they sell that stuff in little half pint cans at insane prices. If you live in a rural area or on the outskirts of a city you should be able to find a farm supply store or two. See if the ones near you sell, or can get, cleaner for milking machinery. They will sell the stuff in five gallon drums and it will be cheap - it is the very best tank cleaner. you simply submerge the tank in it for a day, pull it out and rinse it and then oil it. To do that mix up a gallon of gas/oil like you would for a weed-wacker or a chain saw and toss it in the bike's tank and shake it around to coat the inside with a thin oil film and then put it back in the jug to use in your saw. The milk-machine cleaner will be good for a number of tanks so if you have a couple of buddies who want to clean a tank or two get them to split the cost of the acid.
