The pin holding in the assembly

I tried squeezing with vice grips and pulling but nothing seems to make a difference

Thread a tap which fits the inner diameter of the pin until it creates enough threads and has enough bite to be pulled upward, thereby removing the pin.
 
Those are called split pins or split dowel pins. Your local machine shop should have a replacement or they'll know where you can get one.
 
They are usually called Roll Pins or spring pins.

Split pins are the English name for what are called cotter pins here.

And Cotter pins in the UK are wedge shaped pins used on old style bicycle cranks. In US English that means a split pin. Sheesh.....
 
Just telling you what they are called - and having fun with our "shared" language.
 
Yep I'd call it a roll pin.
Toss a tap in it and smack it out of there
