I guess it's my turn, 1978 CB400t project

after toying around with the carbs again, I think it would be better to boost the main jets way higher. I'm thinking about rejetting to about 135 ish. probably a little higher even. anyways, the terrible new england weather is coming, so I've starting the process of putting the bike away, but here are some pictures of my last little ride around providence. =[

Really nice bike. I also have a '78 400T. I've heard that there can be performance issues if the exhaust crossover is removed. Any problems?

Also, there is a gel battery that can be mounted sideways to tuck it up under the tail. Might really open up the frame.

Great work.

ahahha performance issues when removing the crossover.... well eric and i didnt exactly have performance issues as much as issues with the temporary downpipe (some flex exhaust tubing used as a stopgap until a custom exhaust is made) leaked like a mofo, didn't you blow one of em off the header when we flew down henderson bridge eric?... but performance issues? nah that thing runs like a top.

man, the cross pipe was the first thing to go, it was big and heavy and a rust collector, you'll just have re-jet correctly. I'm preparing to either weld my own or get some pipes bent soon, but I haven't decided what to do yet.

here are ones that I'm thinking of:
1st

2nd

or

trying to figure out what would look best, what would be easiest, what would be cost efficient etc...

updates soon hopefully!

Yeah, the chrome exhaust (2nd of 3) is really nice, but i think it's complemented by the frame it rides under, all long straight lines. The 400TII's underbelly is engine, and without the crossover, there's a huge gap in it, might not look as tight.

Any of those 2-1's look good. Here's a link to a photo of a '78 400T with the MAC 2-1, i think it looks pretty good.

I'm not advocating MAC. i've never bought one myself and i've heard they have coating issues. i do like the straight lines of the header pipe.

Where do you get your carb jets?

I hear you on the gap, which leads me towards the first, where it will cross over the side of the engine, much like the stock pipes. I'm going to be getting them made custom to the shape of the underside of my bike.

Hey Eric,

Could you post some photos of how your Roccity seat is attached to the frame? I like how you've run the seat straight, over the dip in the frame just behind the tank. I'm curious about how to mount a custom cafe seat.

Thanks

+1 on the seat mount. I am going to do a seat on the same frame and want to mount it straight without the dip, but I also want to be able to put the 2-up seat back on for my wife to come on rides.

Cheers

I'm loving the color on this bike! That's like the color I'm planning to paint my tank and seat once I'm done. I gotta get the thing running first :(

new camera, some pictures from it.

finished a few things here and there, basically finished.  This will be my ride while I build an xs650 as a long term project.

helmet hair for all!

That's pretty cool. Well done. Most of the time, those bikes come out aweful because of the frame shape. But you pulled it off.
