ok so number 1 this is my first post and i have done an immense amount of searching here and a bunch of other forums.

next order of business is i got this 1974 cb125 for free from a friend of my fathers, he bought it new and rode 5500 miles and stored it for 30 years. needless to say i had some old fuel to clean.

so here is what i have done so far…… drained the tank and carb, cleaned the tank and carb, new petcock, cleared the vent in the gas cap (it was causing vapor lock), rebuilt the carb with new floats, new coil, condenser, points, spark plug, fuse, battery. i have adjusted the point gap, adjusted the valves, adjusted float height

and here is the issue…it is a bit hard to start, but if i turn the idle up it will start, then the idle will climb as it warms up…so i have to lower it, then it gets to a point where it will run perfect. then i go for a ride around the neighborhood (.7 miles) i can make it about 1 or 2 miles and when it gets up to full running temp it starts to backfire and pop and fart but doesn't stall out, I'm still able to limp it home but then at a point it will fully stall out and WILL NOT START BACK UP.

all it does is backfire fuel out of the carb.

im stumped, and i know there is someone on here with an answer or that can at least point me in the right direction.

sorry for the long winded first post but i want to make the bike rideable before i start the project i intended to in the first place was make a nice fun little cafe racer.

Because you're having an engine issue, the first two things to eliminate are ignition and compression.

Use a strobe light to test both static and advanced timing and run a compression test.

After that, mess with the carbs. Ultrasonic cleaner is a good bet. Boiling for 20 minutes in lemon juice or a 50/50 mix of Pine Sol and water also works well. It also never hurts to double check and make sure all the jets are fully clean and installed correctly.

Idle should be set around 1000-1200 RPM after the bike has warmed up.

You'll probably need the choke to get the bike running and half choke is usually necessary for a minute or two.

ok so i would like to say……i am an idiot. i adjusted the valves on the wrong stroke. now its fixed and it runs awesome. again i am just an idiot

Not an idiot. That's just how we learn. Most all of us have been there. I sure have.
