I have the mikuni bs34's on my kz1000 off for cleaning and rebuild. I have everything done except replacing the pilot jets. The manual says there is a plastic cap that goes over the top that had to be removed to access the pilot jets. But all i see is what looks like metal caps and i can't for the life of me figure out how you remove them.
My carbs on my Zook have caps over the mixture screws. Only came with caps in the US so you can't richen the mixture (pesky EPA). So to mess with the mixture you have to delicately drill off the metal caps.
But wait for somebody wiser than myself to chime in before taking a power tool to your carbs.......
Rich is right - you are looking at the idle mixture screw. You need to take a small drill bit and just drill through the cap (carefully so you don't gouge the mixture screw). Then put a self tapping screw in the hole and pull the cap out.
The pilot jets (in the carb bowls) should have a plastic / rubber cap over them.
Just did this, be careful because the metal cap is only about 3/16" thick, then it's the air mixture screw. You don't want to mess up the slot. The screw is brass and super soft.
Is this where its supposed to be. I know it looks really dirty, but this was a before picture. Honestly all the main jets and float needles were clogged to hell and back. The bike would run before i took the carbs off, but only in choke. My understanding was that the pilot jet was ran its fuels source from the main jet. Maybe i read that wrong.
they started capping things in 80 i beleive..
this is a grrrreat place... but if your a Z guy... u need to get over to www.kzrider.com
now that is a place to solve all ur kawa z issues.
lol, yeah i know. I'm quite and ask when i need the help. I prefer to read and learn from peoples experiences before i try my hand at it. I have found it makes my endevours alot more successful.
Thanks Teazer, that diagram makes me feel alot better. I thought i was nuts. either way though it looks like i have to drill it out. What sucks is that i don't have a drill handy.
I tried to pull it out with pliers but that ended in failure, plus i was afraid of ruining something too. I'd hate to ruin a good set of carbs.
I keep re-reading the manual and it says its supposed to be a plastic cap with o-rings. well i know for sure that the cap is aluminum. This is really bothering me. I don't want to really rebuild my carbs half-assed you know. Where would i find these mythical plastic caps from and why are my caps made from aluminum?
So yeah i ended up having to drill into them and use a counter sink for 2 of them the other to i just drilled into the top with an 1/8" bit and was able to pull them out with pliers. Sheesh these things are covered in crud. Oh well, i guess i'll be going to bikebandit to order new caps cause they are the only place i have seen them at.
