I think I have my work cut out for me

"Stay Thirsty my Friends"
So I am getting ready to set up shop in my Barn. Long story, but me and my Dad built it about 4 years ago and it has been used to sore a bunch of crap since we built it.

The outside

So I know some guys have had quite the project cleaning out their garages and getting them set up as a shop, but I might be taking the cake on this one... take a look at what stands in my way.

Just 1800 sq ft of junk!

The plan will be to have 2 motorcycle work benches in this corner. All my airlines will be plumed in the ceiling and I have a new twin screw 27hp Ingersoll-Rand industrial compressor setup to replace that crappy 85 gallon 8hp orange turd there in the corner.

Hopefully I can get a decent paint booth going and slowly turn this into a real shop... until then, "Stay thirsty my friends!"

hahahahaha man that looks just like my fathers shop! man oh man! He's always tellin me I can come work in his shop, but I just can't handle the clutter!

you got a lot of space there though, with a day or two of organizing you could get a good work area...dont really need too much for workin on a bike! ;)

Sweet! I just have half of a two car garage in which to build my shop. Can you say cramped? :-D You're ahead of the curve with that barn. I hope you post up some progress pics! I'd think that 8hp 85 gal. compressor would be more than enough for bike work. How is it insufficient? I was looking for one smaller, actually. Am I asking for trouble with a smaller tank/hp rating?

Yeah you would think it was really good or something because it is bright orange and huge, but don't let size fool you with compressors. the compressor in the pic above is a cheap Asian made tool made to look big and industrial. More than sufficient for most people if you just need air.

But if you are using the air for high quality painting, etc and you have expensive tools down line than you want the air as dry as possible and cool too. There are lots of things to look for in a good compressor, and don't think for a minute that because it is small if can't do big things.

I snapped a couple quick pictures of my smaller compressor(sorry it is so dusty ::) ), it is made by quincy here in the ol' USA. It is still 20 gallons but it is on wheels and has a 3.5 hp single stage motor and a vertical twin cast iron compressor (6.7 cfm @ 90psi.) It will provide clean, dry air for hours and it sounds like a old British bike to boot!

But this sucker is heavy! So i do have a couple cheap harbor freight compressors lying around

The compressor

Anyway I know a lot of guys don't care about that kinda stuff, but I figure this is gonna be a shop used by my family hopefully for years to come with lots of bikes and cars so I might as well take my time and do it right!

Have a garage sale, a bonfire, and get some good shelving and you'll be set! We had a compressor like your orange one where i work. It was a PITA to work near since it was so loud. But then we got one like your blue one - it's easy to forget it's even there now.

Yeah most of the junk belong to my grandmother... she is 96 and now in full time care so I can finally get rid of the stuff she left behind. There are actually a few gems in there nothing motorcycle related, but there are about 4500 old LP's from the 30's right up to the mid 70's.

I am a very neat and organized person normally so this place should get organized real nice...

I wish it could be done in a weekend, but it seems this will take a bit longer as free time is short, but the plan is to get a full size lift in there... I picked one up from a local place going out of business, and then this guy buried in the back of the garage will get a shiny new fuel injected 5.0 and modern running gear!

But that is way off in the future... bikes are small and quick compared to full restos on old cars. Plus old cars are getting expensive... you can see my other sickness of sorts there which is 80's BMWs... love em, and got a few!

1+

Exactly the orange thing is LOUD... like earmuffs loud! hahaha, I love the word "earmuffs" funny as hell :D

This new Ingersoll that I am picking up should run at only 79db... thats just a little louder than the inside of most modern cars @ 70mph... 8)

Holy shit, is that the Flea Market? You sure do have a lot of labor in your future! It will make a really nice work shop though, and with that bad ass compressor your getting; well lets just say I am green with envy! Are you planning on setting up for business out of there?

I am in a pre-fab 10 X 15 building that was used as a sewing room by the PO who was a seemstress! You both are leaps ahead of me in this dept.!

Man I know your sewing room well... I have been lurking for quite some time and I am pretty familiar with a lot of the active builds going on... I love your set up, it is perfect for motorcycles. In fact I am sectioning out small space for working on motorcycles. I like the tools close and hate having to get up and walk across the shop because you forgot to put a socket on the cart. The Motorcycle area should be about 10x12 or so but flexible to expand, not much bigger than what most guys out there guys have. When I lived in Seattle I did a build in my kitchen at college... it was a school owned apartment and lets just say they were not impressed with the frame on the counter and parts in the sink!

I still need to keep my tractor inside and I want a place to store future projects in a climate controlled area... who knows maybe a big tv ;)

As far as setting up shop for business, that might be down the road... my dad will probably retire to build stuff in here soon, it looks like it is going that way anyway. He is helping me in the process of trying to do a little vineyard on the property so there will be lots to keep him busy and building a few spec houses in the back area to sell later...
