So i am currently working on the rear-sets for my '82 GS450L and having some issues with ideas/inspiration for mounting.
They came with some semi-universal mounting tabs that don't fit my bike right. The positioning(Up or Down or Out) make the bolt on pegs scrape/hit the swing arm.
So i am needing help with ideas on DIY mounting. I am trying to keep this build on a low budget and hoping for a do it at home thing but willing to hear you out if you happen to know of a decently priced set i can get for mounting, that would fit.
Also, mostly, just looking for some inspiration on both the seat and rearset ideas.
Any help is appreciated! And of course pictures are especially appreciated! Thanks.
Here is what I done on my KZ400. I used rear pegs from a bigger KZ welded
to a metric bolt. With 2 pieces of 10 gauge ( about .110-1/8 in. thick ) sheet
metal with holes drilled for the lever. The toe is a piece 1/2 in. tubing. The
mount is a piece of pipe with some bronze bushings and 1/8 thick strap for
gussets welded to the frame. To secure the bolt I used a 17mm self locking
nut that Kawasaki uses for motor mounts. That nut is thinner than a standard
size nut and it was needs to clear the drive chain. For the linkage I used
small hiem joints and rod.
Look through Sonreir's build threadhttp://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=38872.0 he's got a few different ideas and variations on how to mount rearsets, I did something very similar for my cb350 but I don't have pictures currently (the bike is about 7200 miles away). Hope this helps and good luck!
If you make your own be sure to get the angle of the pivot on the peg right. If you scrape and the peg won't fold you've got trouble on your hands.
I see a lot of solid-welded pegs and welded pivots and it makes me shudder a little when I see them.
Granted if they're mounted high enough, it would be very difficult to scrape them, but more often than not I see pegs at stock height just moved back but they're stationary.
Mine are solid mounted, adjustable, with old school BMX pegs. The levers went through three iterations to get right. They are mounted high enough, I think. I went with a pretty aggressive setup/stance all around. Next time though, I think I will just buy a universal set from Fast From the Past.
Yeah. A Solid mount tab set up seems to be the way to go on my bike. Ain't much room anywhere on this little guy so i will have to work around it and get a set to protrude to the sides a little. Probably cut up the passenger peg mount and get some 1/4" plate and start welding it up with a few holes just in case i decide to adjust for city-vs-highway riding position.
Damn, if these ain't nice! Cost more than twice as much for me to make mine.

Here's what I did on a GS 550.
I ground everything off the frame concerning footpegs. Used 3/4"x2" rectangle to make channel and positioned '06 GSXR 600 rear sets to the channel with solid round stock drilled and threaded.
The holes are spaced too far apart. Smaller holes, closer together give you more realistic adjustments. Maybe two of those holes are usable, another if you run the rod from the bottom. I went through all of that when I designed mine.
Well i decided that the width of the frame and everything wasn't going to let me do a frame mount without some Major mods to line everything up... So i decided to make a set of mounts for the original mounting areas out of some flat 3/8" steel plate. They fit really well and the position is now perfect. Just need to get the mounts ground down a bit to give them shape so im not just sitting on a pair of funny looking blocks!
