If the Speedometer is not working or lags, could it end up being a big issue?

Or is it just a matter of replacing the cables.

Sorry about the newbiness of my posts, I'm just starting out.

I already downloaded some shop manuals and went through them, but I am not the most mechanically inclined to say the least.

Model: Yamaha RD350

If the cable is good, then it is most likely the speedo gear drive in the front hub. Should be able to find a good used one on ebay.

Lube the cable (for now just some wd40 will do) and try it again. Its probobly dirty, dry and sticking. If its not the cable its possibly the drive gear as stated above. Could be the speedo itself though. Have to eliminate possibilities. Also, for future reference, always include the model and year of your bike when asking questions. Trust me, it'll save you from a bunch of "what bike" replies, and more importantly it helps everyone help you find a solution quickly. Good luck man!

I checked the gear, it seems ok, and the cable thing is spinning, so I think it is the actual speedometer itself.

I suppose it's something that I will need to replace, I'm thinking about going with something like this: http://www.acewell-meter.com/c0_1.php?pid=16

Since the original speedometer/tach has the ignition in it, where does this go when you get an aftermarket speedo?

In my case, it's going wherever I can fit it. I removed my tach, cut the gauge bracket, spun it around and just started fitting things back up the general area they came from (minus a whole lot of wires and plastic now). Don't know if you can see by the pic, but it may help...

That isn't where everything ended up, more of the first draft.
