ignition coil question

There are some decent options out there for those of us who have a coil die. But I am curious if anyone has tried adapting one of the modern coil-on-plug design coils to their vintage ride. These new coils produce much higher energy spark and that would have to help. They are small units and would be easy to build a mount for. Any input?

I'm poking at doing this with my '79 CB650. I found some CBR600 coil on plug coils, and if I hook two coils up in series, the resistance is about the same as the stock coil pack (which is a wasted spark design that fires two plugs at the same time). The coils on the bike are already a bit sketchy, so I don't have much to lose.

I would pay attention to the resistance of the new coils versus the resistance of the old coils - as the resistance goes down, the current goes up (Voltage = Current * Resistance, and in this example, Voltage stays the same), which could fry your points or your ignition modules.

Otherwise, I believe there is no real reason why it wouldn't work other than making them fit. Do check the resistance though, a lot of late model coils are 1 ohm or less, while most older coils are 3 - 5 ohms.

I haven't pulled any off the shelf to check the resistance yet. When I get a chance I will see what I come up with.

I think another important part would be to make sure you have the wiring harness for them as well. Finding the proper connectors for the coils could be a real pain if you didn't get the harness.

I run an old mom and pop parts store. I have plenty of access to this kind of stuff. ;)
