Ignition Switch Relocation/Replacement

Hello all,

Anyone have a write up on anything related to this issue? I have a 1980 GS550E and I want to get the ignition switch off of the triple tree and attach it to the frame. Since the stock piece is so huge, I figured an aftermarket ignition switch may be a better choice. Anyone have experience changing ignition switches? Is it as easy as cutting old and soldering the ignition switch wires? Any direct plug ins? Can I use universal or are there certain types of switches I should be looking for? Also, if you have anything related to the issue, please share.

Thanks for you help!

One switch is pretty much like any other, assuming it can handle the amperage.

When I move the switches, I usually go with a universal option and wire it up to match.

Thanks Sonreir. Sounds like this may be as easy as expected. Would you happen to have a link to the last universal switch you purchased? Or your favorite?

Also, while searching, I am seeing that many ignitions have only 2-3 wires, while my current system is a 4 wire per the wiring diagram. Although, it looks like 2 go to the tail light and 2 go to the fuse box. Seems like a weird combination....

RED. Power from Main Fuse
ORANGE. (powered by Red when ON) Orange wire is for Power back to the fuse block for Head, Ignition & Signal
GREEN. Power from the light circuit that is powered by the Signal fuse.
BROWN. (Powered by Green when switch in ON, Powered by Red when switch in Park.) Brown wire To the taillight, taillight only, no other lights.

Do a search on Amazon or eBay for universal ignition switch. I use the kind that include the starter as part of the switch (car style). You will almost definitely be giving up your parking lights feature with any universal switch (which is why you have four wires and not two).

Basically, you put the red wire on the B pole and then all the other wires on the I pole. Or, if the poles are numbered, battery wires goes on 1 and everything else on 2. 3 is for the starter solenoid, if you plan on using it.

Hmm I dont think I have a parking lights feature. When I turn the key on, none of my lights come on. I thought this added wiring was to make it so the lights are on their own fuse instead of the main. Now, when i turn on my headlight, the tail light comes on. Would this be changed? I would still have a running brake light correct?
