Ok, so I am green to the scene.
I Love the bikes snd build feeds.

I am going to start a thread here that will last all winter.

I have just acquired a 1980 xs850. I think I want to finish it with a two up possible seat but do want to change the bars and paint ant tail end for sure..

Like I said Im green as grass and could use all the wisdom this site has to offer.

Thanks

Welcome.
I miss my Yamaha badly. The XS platform is a solid starting point regardless of size IMHO.

Where from Indiana are you from? There is a growing group of us all around Indy.

Just south of South Bend.

Cant wait to get started!!!

I still havent decided exactlly what I want but being single and wanting to give rides I think I want a 2 up seat any good ideas?

welcome! you got a nice clean triple to start with. i have it's little bro, the 750 and love it to death.

I too own an 850. If you haven't already check out www.yamaha-triples.org, It is an invaluable resource for these triples. Check out the "So you just acquired a triple" thread over there. If you need anything, dont hesistate to ask. I took mine down to every nut, bolt, washer, and wire. These are fun bikes with plenty of zip and very little maintenence.

You could do a 2-up bratt style seat. I made a 1up hump seat that uses stock seat pan so I can swap it off for stock seat when the lady needs a ride. Not quite as cool looking but very functional.

This is how mine turned out. A few more things done after this picture but you get the idea. The wife loves the seat on this. Its big enough and comfy but not terrible to look at. If i want i can bolt on a single bump stop seat on the same hardware.

I guess The only Question I have is why do we have different tanks..<Mine seems semi- teardrop but nyours has semi knee indents..

Hmm IDK

I bought a standard tank and fitted it to the bike. Pretty simple and if you want to attempt i can help out.

Ok. So I got this great bike. Started in the late warm weather we were having in December. But now I can't get it to start. My battery runs out of juice before the moment of truth. I even tried to jump it but no dice.

This is my worries now. The starter sounds as if its doing great until its rolled over like 4/6 times. Then it sounds like it totally disengages and just spins freely. Any ideas or suggestions.

Nice looking bike man :)
Could sound like your starter bendix is broken.
I have an xs650, and aparently its a weak part on those

Great bike- Have one myself. Check out the triples site, lots of great info over there. I'd especcially recommend going through the thread "So you bought a triple". It will take you through all the things you should do to make your tripleready to ride.

Try to bump start it. The battery is probably just old and isn't giving enough current. Plus check the connections really well.

Or if it's in a cold garage, put it on a trickle charger overnight and put it somewhere warm for a couple hours before you try to start it.

Thanks guys.....I got her started....I didn't ride her but its 30 degrees here lol........ now to follow the rest of the "so you aquired an old triple" advice. fluids, bearings, so on stay tuned for pics and all the questions I'm sure I will have ...

Rebuilt Brakes- New Seats- now which bars????

I am 6'1" and an a pretty new rider. I want so much to go the sort of cafe-esque route with my newly gotten gains. But I am not about to start hacking and chopping at my 80' xs850. I think with just changing the bars and the seat I can achieve the look I want.

I have made two seats already!!! Isn't this site coupled with you-tube phenomenal for DIY tips and tutorials. I will be posting the seat pics. I have a cafe hump style that I crafted myself and a "Brat" style flat seat. Two up for the ladies......recent divorce.......DUH.

But I am stuck on the perfect set of bars. I have sat on the bike, (making race noises all the while), with my hands in the exact position I want them in, but I guess I'm not sure how to get from the pretend to the perfect, without buying 3,4 or 5 sets of bars and returning the ones I don't want.

I am green to the personalizing of such things so any such help or suggestions (with Pictures, or links) will be much appreciated.
