Inexpensive replacement ignition coils for CB360s

You can always get it running with time or money.
Hi folks,

The ignition coils on my CB360 were getting funky when hot and causing the bike to stall out. As this was the second set of OEM (read: 36 year old) coils that had failed on me, I decided to look for a modern replacement that wouldn't cost me all of my dollars.

I found that Yamaha XT600 coils (from at least '92-'95) have the exact same bolt spacing as the stock 360 coils, and found them for $14 a piece with free shipping on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271183643901

I'm not associated with the seller or anything, they just had a good price and the coils work well for me. I tested both of the coils with my multimeter and they both came up as exactly 4.5 ohms. That means they'll only be pulling 3 amps a piece with battery voltage at 13.8 volts. Here's a picture of them installed on the coil bracket:

Note that I had to make adapter wires as the new coils use spade connectors and the 360 uses bullet connectors. Also note that the spark plug wire and power wires are on opposite sides on this coil, instead of the same side on the 360 coil. Not too big a deal - I cut the wires off my junk coils and added spade connectors.

I'm not 100% if these coils need resistor spark plug caps - I'm using the caps that came with the coils. Hopefully more knowledgeable folks will chime in. These coils may also work for 350s, but I don't have one of those so I can't speak to that :)

Hey man thanks for the info. I saw these on fleebay and am in the process of purchasing new coils also. Didn't have the big $$$ for dyna and good to know that theybare 4.5 Ohms. How do they perform so far??

They seem to work just fine, but I only have about 30 miles on them. Turns out there's still something wrong with my charging system, so my coils probably weren't bad, but the bike does fire up quicker with the new coils, so there's that ;D

Thanks man, I have a rewound three phase stator and a three phase R/R waiting for me to install them, but I'd like to identify that the issue isn't the wiring first.

How did these work out for you, man? I just ordered some for my 360. Did you end up buying new resistor caps or anything?

I had one of them end up being DOA (I think, not 100%), and the company shipped me a replacement with no questions asked, so that was good. I did get new caps, but that's because the originals were junk.

I have a set of the same coils and just wondering if I wired mine up correctly. Is there going to be a difference in which is positive and which is contact breaker terminal?

So on my coils they have a little "+" and "-" printed on them. I wired up the "+" sides to the black with white tracer positive wire coming out of the bike's wiring harness, and the "-" sides to the blue and the yellow wires that go to the points and condenser.

Make sense?

That's the right way to do it.....Gold Star on your permanent record... ;D

Thanks got it right by dumb luck lol first try

Nice! Let me know how they run for you, I still don't have many miles on my bike due to a variety of issues. I'm curious as to how they hold up / perform.
