Intermittant headlights and display backlighting...

Ribo

Twist the "go-go" side and hold on!
Seems like this XJ650 is nothing but electrical woes of late...

I have an issue now whereby the headlight and the backlighting for the speedo and Tach randomly go out on me... I'll be riding along all happy then boom - darkness - it's a good job the force is strong in me.

Anyway, I can't figure out why this is happening -- I thought it was short and I found two things that looks suspicous and corrected them but still no joy. When it goes out the back light, turn-signals, display LED's all still work and sometimes if I hit the hi-beam it all comes back but then, cuts out again randomly.

Anyone give me any pointers here? Are there any relay's that could be fucking up like the neutral gear shift one?

Appreciate any help.

No relays. Probably just a loose ground wire.

Hmm - are you sure? What is it that turns all these lights off after a min or so when the engine isn't running?

My wiring diagram for the XJ650 H -- shows the Yellow wire coming from the Headlight going to the left-switch and then the Blue wire from the switch going to a relay. Blue also comes from the backlight to the display and goes to the same relay..

The reserve lighting relay is only for the headlight, if I remember correctly.

Good point - this actually helped me isolate the problem to a wire that was grounding on the frame due to poor insulation.. thanks man. I did order a new relay and I'll probably just swap that out even though I've proved it's not bad now... it's 35 years old so I figure it's going to die at some point...

So anyway, now I got that sorted, I don't want to tempt fate but think my recent electrical kerfuffles are behind me..... I also FINALLY got to the root of the "oh shit I just lost all power and the bike died" problem.. again a loose wire but this time coming from the kill switch, and replaced the battery that had a bad cell with a nice Motobatt AMG. So far it appears to be solid, firing up first time and a nice 13v when I get back home after an longish ride.

When I get the bike stripped down in the winter I'm going to be hitting you up for a new harness and I can't wait to be rid of this.
