Jacket for seat leather?

God help the child who grows out of everything
Hi all,
Anybody know if an old leather jacket will stand up to the rigors of being as motorcycle seat? I found an old Danier leather jacket at my local thrift shop, too small and tattered to wear, but the colour is perfect for the scheme I'm thinking of for my GR.
Wifey dear says it wont hold up but, it's leather and leather is leather, right?

If its a good high quality coat and not some junk "fashion" jacket than you'll be just fine. Plenty of guys here have used Goodwill leather coats to make seat covers.

my buddy diggerdanh has done this with success. So YES.

Yep - leather is leather, but the better the leather, the better the final product. I did a makeshift seat out of a big old leather handbag, a skateboard deck, and a stadium seat foam pad...I've been meaning to re-do it a bit nicer, but it's been holding up fine for the past year:

Too cool! If you don't mind, I'm gonna use your idea. Turns out I have a slate blue jacket that there no chance I'm ever gonna wear again..... it'd go with what I plan for paintwork and has the bonus of being about 25 years old and VERY soft!

Great post, great idea!

Wow, so many replies and so fast! thank you all! Goodwill Leather Seat it is!

Corsair: apparently this idea is not 100% mine, so go ahead, you're welcome to it! That leather you have looks great

I've found nice leather sofas for free or cheap on Craigslist and the alleys near the local college. They are usually trashed by a cat or dog, but the back is usually perfect and good seat quality.

This.
Is genius

Wife foced me to throw out my mistress (broken down old black leather recliner). Something about the baby might choke on the pieces falling off of it, or yak yak yakkity yak! Either way I did for the sake of my daughter. Then I got the brilliant idea of holding on to a piece the old girl and stripped it of all it's leather for my cafe project.

I thought I was the most brilliant, original bastard around! Right up until I saw this post that is.

I've used old leather jackets for years - usually when I want a suede or nap type finish [ reverse ].
An excellent source is old auto seats. Usually get thrown out or very cheap if they're old - but not yet "classic" !

My pal just picked up a very heavy tan leather jacket that I'm going to use on my Cafe Creme seat [ nap side out ]. £5 [ $9 ] at a local charity shop.
