Hello everyone. I am new to the site and i like what i see. a lot of knowledge and great ideas on this site. Well I've decided to do another cafe-ish resto project. I recently acquired a rd400. Cool back story is that this bike was my dads old bike back when. I remembered it as a youngster. Times got tough the bike was sold and never seen again. Twenty plus years later i inadvertently ran into the guy my dad sold it to at the local watering hole. We go to talking about bikes and low and behold he still had it in his garage using it as a shelf. So a half a dozen phone calls later and some good old american green backs the bike was mine.
So now i have the bike stripped and i started on painting the frame. I have hear some great things about a product called POR15. So i decided to try it although my local paint sop did not carry it. They had what they assured me was the same stuff. However it was not and i urge anyone to stay away from this product turns out ver splotchy
What do you mean by splotchy? Did you strip the frame to bare metal and thoroughly clean it? I only ask because I know many of thechassis coating products require clean bare metal to properly bond and set up.
Anyhow, looks like you've got a great start for your project, and your dads old bike back! That's very cool. Keep us posted.
I hope you didn't use that inside your gas tank....Por-15 makes several different products for different applications...The gas tank sealer they make is a 3 step process they also have something for the outside of the car or bottom of chassis ...what you got looks like its similar to that ....it may hold up to gas but it may not and if it doesn't it could ruin your petcock/ carbs and who knows what else (engine) Def try a test piece out and soak it in gas for a few days to see what happens

I cleaned the frame as well as sanded it. My local paint deal assured me that you could paint over existing paint. Any ways since that did not work in my favor i use my old stand by Seymour MRO paint.
Works great ultimately powder coating would have been the best solution but trouble is my frame wont fit in my powder coating oven. Im also one of those guy who docent like to outsource if i don't have to. Anyways this is how is turned out. Side note my garage usually docent look this bad doing house work helped pollute my garage.
Ok i know its been about a fort night since I've posted an update but work and life out side the garage has been hectic. Haven't been working on the bike so when i come back to work on it my ideas have changed so thats why I'm back tracking at times. So i did manage to get a little slice o' garage time and massaged the rear passenger peg brackets to accommodate a set of very used FZR rear sets. I know its probably not the most appealing way to do this but for not much time and headache it works for me.
Burnt this spacer for the fzr brake conversion
out of 1/2 aluminum. It turned out a bit wonky. Since
I don't have access to a lathe so I will try to grind it up
real nice like.
Cleaned up the rear sets so I can powder coat them.
Also tacked up a mount for the rear master cylinder.
Using a a cbr 1000 master cylinder seeing as I had one laying around.
