So there's a guy who drives an old Divco milk van like this: http://images.google.com/images?q=divco+milk+truck&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US

He's got it fairly tricked out, Cummins turbo diesel.....airbags etc.
His is mainly for hauling his shit to track days and stuff. Too cool but really rare.
If you want to give up a few 'Kewl Pointz' hit up your local FritoLays (think potato chips) distribution center. They regularly all but give away their box vans after a certain point. My next door neighbor bought one with something like 200K miles which is nothing for a solid diesel for $1200. It's got an aluminum body comprised of mostly flat or single bend sheet, gets 20mpg or so loaded, unloaded, highway, surface streets etc.
A retired fleet vehicle might be a good way to go if you can do without a factory warranty.
I may be heading down to look at one myself this week. I have lots of machining stuff including several "small" machines that would lend themselves to mobility pretty nicely.
I can bolt one of my steel tables in behind the driver's partition and then bolt down a 9-20 Jett lathe and my small Grizzly mill/drill that've been waiting for a home since i moved the big machines in. I've got a beefy Honda generator with a bent (trailer debarkation mishap) frame that could go to the project too. Even with that, some cabinetry/shelves and such I will still have plenty of room for 4-5 bikes and a fold down double size bunk. Could get nuts and work up a folding table too. I've got a beer fridge that's currently holding all my sandpaper (don't ask....it was there) add some folding chairs and a few other small details and it'd be almost better than home!
