Keep or sell: Thruxton and CB750

gribbs

Coast to Coast
Hey guys, I need your opinions:

I now have a 2004 Thruxton with 25,000 kms. It is sweet, runs great, yada yada. I also have my CB750 which will be running great shortly after the carb and ignition fixes that a shop is working out.

The Trump is totally paid on credit. A pretty low rate of interest, but credit none the less. The CB is paid for, obviously.

My intention was to sell the CB for about $2000 and put it on the the Thruxton credit (owing 5200 currently) to leave me with a newer bike and about $3000 in debt. Now I oculd sell the Thruxton and make a little cash, since I got it for a steal.

----The CB feels like "mine" since I slaved over rebuilding it. There is hardly a single piece of the bike I havent cleaned, painted, polished and sworn at. I like teh fact that it is old, and I like when people say it looks cool and clean. I can dream about radical mods in the winter that I can never afford on the thruxton, even after I pay it off pretty much.

-----The Thruxton does not feel like mine, since I can barely afford it, and it's stock, and I am not sure if I should hack it up or keep it stock. It is a cool bike stock and worth more for resale if the need arises down the road. The thruxton is more reliable, in theory, and I like brit bikes more than jap bikes overall. My dad rode a BSA and gramps had a Norton back in England in the 50's, so I am diggin all that jazz.

So, to make this long story shorter, if you were me, what would you do? Keep in mind I just bought a house, but I have renters moving into rooms in september, so those costs will be really manageable soon. And I could throw in the fact that the Triumph is about $25 more a month to insure, but that isnt much of a deal, really.

Have at 'er. Here are pics of both bikes. I respect your opinions and look forward to readin what you think. In fact, I just made a small complaint in a post on the Triumph Rat forums about how all the bonnys there look the same and how the mods and parts are so few and expensive! dotheton DIY is lackin over there big time!

Cheers and thanks in advance! The final pic would be the next project, if I decided to sell both bikes completely. And If I want to go further in debt on one single car loan and leave bikes behind for now

I dunno..Really tough decision...

Is the Thrux really making you bleed $$ as much as you say?

dude.. keep the 750! you can always buy another thrux if you miss it.. if you sell that 750, you won't get it back again. sounds like you've already made your decision; the 750 feels like yours, the thrux doesn't.

i would sell the trux, the CB is cheaper all around insurance and crap. plus yo will not see another one like it, the reliablity is awesome... your trux is stock, you can always just pick up antoher one down the line if you want. i love that CB by the way!

I don't even have to finish your whole post.
Intellectually, the Thruxton makes sense. Plus, it looks good. People envy you that bike. It's cool, man.
But- it has no soul. While you ride it you're thinking to yourself, "I should be enjoying this more..."
Sell it.

Do youself and never go into hock that deep again, either. That's just flat nuts.
If I was your father, you'd be grounded for a freakin YEAR. NUTS

i didnt want to be the one to say it, and avoided responding because of it.

yeah man, dont buy things you dont have the money for. sell the thrux, get out of debt, and than ride the hell out of the 750. youll be happier, and you will have a bike with some real soul.

The CB750 is a real vintage bike with some real history. The Thruxton is a retro bike that looks like an old Triumph.

Keep the Honda!

WOW unanimous er what?! And ya, I had never touched my line of credit in 5 years, so it does feel scary to be 5 grand deep now for more or less a "toy." I was also thinking, what if I go down - then the bike isnt worth the debt I am in at all.

I think you guys are all correct. The Honda does have soul. I have a feeling I am siding with you all.

The Honda will be looking different too shortly. I am in the middle of building a dash with a cool Yamaha guage and smaller tach, and I think I will fit up that Manx tank I keep trying to sell but dudes keep lowballing me on......who thinks they will get a quality fibreglass tank with a nice cap and petcock for 200 bucks....dreamin. I guess that should be left for a different thread.

Thanks for the replies ....mostly from vets on the board too! Rockin

oh and the Thrux sounds like a kids Big Wheel (mufflers on those would have been cool, at least) and the CB roars! :)

I thought I'd play devil's advocate but being flogged naked down the street isn't my thing so I'll say keep the cb. I'm with everyone else especially GO. It seems like you've made your mind but need a few backers to help you out. The work you put into the honda is way more satisfying than the Thruxton that was bought off the floor and you know it. People may say nice bike to both but which one gives you the most pride when they say it? You know what to do, now do it. lol

Keep the bikes and sell the Boxster to me.

I'll be in the market sometime next year for either a Boxster or an older 911, what are your impressions?

ive been in a boxster s...

fuck that is a fun car. takes the turns doing what feels like mach 1 and is just plain FUN.

Boxsters are money pits...blown sensors galore, super hard on brakes and tires. But...its a porsche! and ones with classy body kits and rims look really, really dope. They dont repsond well to mods either, which is good, since you can spend the money on makin it look goooood instead 8)

I would probably buy an S4 or TT instead though, if I was drivin only one automobile. still works well in the winter ....the turbos actually like the cold!

K back to the bikes. I am selling the Thruxton. It will be on Kijji soon. Probably not on here, since you all know I paid $5000 for it and I will be listing it for about $6500 ....why not, lets see what happens. Then I can buy or have a nice exhaust setup made for the CB with the profits.

Well........

I just bought a '10 Liberty a few months back because the ladies car was going for a shit, I can tow my boat with it while I work on my truck and so on... The point is I am paying for half of it with my line of credit (lower payments with the potential of just interest (tho I pay much more)) and Chrysler.

Reliability is very important for this, A larger family will be in my future so it was a smart decision even tho I want nothing more than a Challenger R/T (said in a few posts around this place).

What was I getting at again????

If you have the finances to have both why not do it? I have had a few life/ death/ dieing/ close calls and traumatic experiences in my life. You only get one shot, every second is the last chance you get at that second you have. (As soon as the Jeep is paid for if kids aren't on the way its a Challenger for me!)

A friend told me that I will be in debt until I die, as will everyone. The question is how much you feel you can live with? Hes the one who told me I should PC my bike frame last year before I started anything "serious" with it.

Why not sell the soulless Trumpet and find an old Beeser or again OLD Triumph like your grandpa had? Build it the way you want it fulfilling the need to both have your brit bike and one you built. Keep the 750 because you need to ride while you wrench.

I agree with everyone on the bikes. :)
But I would much rather have a 78-80 911SC than a boxter.
You can save up and pay cash for the 911, and modify it yourself to go as fast as you can stand. It's a known design, with all the developement done, and it has withstood the test of time.

i would keep both! once im done school a thruxton will be my first purchase! but.. if you must.. never sell that one of a kind vintage honda. what's a couple thousand when you put in a couple thousand hours of work. both are very beautiful.

That's the direction I have been leaning. The plan is to pay cash either way. If I get the classic 911 I'll be able to sell it at any time and get my money back out of it, whereas the price of Boxsters has not bottomed yet.

I've got to respectfully disagree with the consensus. Old Honda's are a dime a dozen. That Thruxton oozes style.

If you've absolutely got to sell one I'd sell the Honda. That's just me. Brit iron is cooler than the jap stuff in my opinion.

I will mirror what some others have said though. Why sell either? Just work 10 more hours a week for a year and be done with the whole question.
