KEEPING THE SHINY SIDE UP

This original post was written to help those riders out there that maintain a fatalistic approach to riding and those that accept that they will crash. Apparently, no-one's interested, and from what I can tell from your comments is that you are soley concerned with the 'having fun' aspect of riding. What ever happened to "Ride to Live, Live to Ride"? Personally, for those that like to jibe at others and insist I am just some noob, FYI... I have had many bikes, all of which I have customed and rebuilt myself. One in particular, a CBR900RR with 160HP at the rear wheel and only 198kg wet. I rode like a maniac for years. I accumulated 25 demerrit points in 3 months once. We only get 12 points here on our license for a whole 3 year period! So you do the maths and tell me i ride like a nana. I wear this retro cafe shit, because that's my style (... and Louie.. it's not a "gay scarf" btw, it's a "gay neckerchief"...) One day I woke up and realised that if I crashed out, I could be in a wheelchair, or worse, dead.. which worked out in my head as = I would never be able ride again. I haven't changed my riding style much, I still ride like a heathen, but it's my attitude in my mind that changed. That's what I've been on about. The complacent attitude of some riders and how a small change toi your mindset can have a possitive and profound affect on your health. So, I'm sorry if you guys think it's rubbish to be mentally pro-active on the bike, but I value RIDING long term more than my immediate gratification. Don't get me wrong, I do push the envelope... I still ride to the edge, but I try to remain aware of MY limit, the bikes limit will usually surpass any riders limit... (unless you're a professional racer). It's important to not let yourself be blinded by your bikes ability to the point that you overlook or over-calculate your own skill... I push myself by 10% everytime I'm on the bike. That ensures me that if I bite off more than I can chrew, that I have not so far to come back from if it all gets a little pear-shaped.

Sure there is a time and place, and if you ain't going hard, then why ride a cafe racer? I'm just saying you don't have to believe the dribble about 'all motorcyclists crash eventually'. It's not healthy, your sub-concious will use it against you. The moment you subscribe to the idea of inevitable crashing, you've already set yourself up. So, here's the revised version for everyone who's too lazy to read or even more lazy to invest in some self-development, which by the way, is the underpinning reason most of us ride. Riding is a spiritual thing.. so where the hell is your love and your maturity towards your fellow brother that is PASSIONATE about riding? So, in lay-terms, don't crash, it sucks. Don't think it is neccessarily a pre-determined thing, because ultimately, your beliefs can have have a powerful influence on your sub-concious self, and ultimately, your reality. Believe it's possible to ride and not crash, and it may not neccessarliy be the case, but you will give yourself a psychological edge. That's all I'm saying. Cheers!

Well, I know a couple of big words, and I know good writing. That wasn't it. Finally skipping to the last paragraph, we find he's been preaching.

It's not a matter of "if", but "when".

I read half the first paragraph then it was just too much.
You don't HAVE to crash, but, if your challenging yourself and having fun, sooner or later you will crash.
There are a lot of inexperienced rides out there with more balls than brains doing nothing but adding to statistics
It will eventually lead to very restrictive legislation, not a matter of if, just when.
The USA lags behind the rest of the world on this but it will eventually happen

He's got a Dreamy avatar though...

Maybe that little piece of poetry came with the newly purchased Cafe starter kit? Rocker? really...? C'mon man.

Brain bucket, check!
Aviator goggles, check!
Gay scarf, thats a big 10-4!
Smug look, Check!
Sailor Sparrows, Check!
Gnar-gnar screen name, Check!

Haha

I could be mistaken, but I think you might be taking this bike thing a little to serious...?

Cheers. It has been revised ;D I'm glad someone gets at least some of what I'm saying. You are right... there is too much balls before brains.. and it is hurting our freedom on the bike. Increasing ignorance and lack of self-control is causing legislation to be toughened. If some riders can exercise a more proactive and mature mindset on the bike, it may perhaps show cagers that we are not all f*ckwits, and perhaps they will then be more mindful of us, and ultimately, not run over us so much.

I get what you are saying, I definitely push it a bit, but not I never go outside my comfort zone. And yeah, crashing is definitely not inevitable but I think you have to be ok with crashing. Don't want it to happen but don't resist it. In the words of Keith Code, "You are just road testing your leathers."

Yeah! Exactly! Keith Code is a legend! Have you managed to get to any of his classes yet? His books are phenomonal :) That's pretty much what I've been getting at, push it a little, but don't go too far past your comfort zone/ability, lest we run out of talent. Be okay with the idea that you may crash and burn at some point... but at the same time, believing that crashing is NOT inevitable ;) Thanks for the support Pabs. I appreciate it.

p.s. your avatar... Big Lebowski? LOL

I did the first course and read both his books. Great course and very cool/nice guy.

Yes it is. Abide.
