Krazy Katana

Haven't put up a thread yet, but here's a picture. Clutch needs some work and I had to order a "new" throttle cable, but it ran really well before I took the old cable off. This thing is super fun in my back yard

Yep a sportbike engine with 30k pulled from a bike that looks like that is a very large paperweight.

It isn't a sportbike, it's a sport tourer. 600's do get abused more than 750 or 1100 though. 750 motor will drop right in and looks exactly the same as 600. ;)
Generally the motors are real reliable, 600's are good to at least 12,500 rpm (do you have any idea what caused rod to crack?) Ignition has built in rev limiter but holding full throttle could cause over revving (or changing down a few too many gears)
The 1100 Katana/GSXR or 1200 Bandit motor is 'two fins' taller on cylinder and requires a low profile engine breather cover and maybe a slight modification to the bolt in frame cross piece/tank support (I've heard a big hammer will work but cutting and welding a flat section looks more professional)
Bigger motors would also need carbs and exhaust though
In my experience, the DT250 is fun but underpowered and overweight, (I had DT250MX and DT 400MX at the same time, mono-hop with monoshock ;) )
The DT175MX was better all round except for weak kick-start shaft , twin shock DT125~175 were too good for the suspension ;D

143bhp 1200 Bandit motor makes them 'interesting' ;)
Really shows how bad rear shock is though (it aint much good with 600 motor ;D )

My friends dad has a bandit 1200. Holy hell, that thing MOVES. Also pulls a wheelie whenever he wants it to.
I have no idea what caused the rod to crack. I was going down the freeway in 6th at probably 80 or so when it happened. I had checked the oil a week or so earlier, so unless it burned a ton of oil in that time it shouldn't have been low on oil.
On the note of being abused... I think the po HAMMERED it. I figure she went down at least 4 times, since there are replacement side covers and both of them are road rashed now.
I'm not expecting the DT to be nearly as fast as the 600 (obviously) but it'll be faster than my friend's LT2 and it seemed like a good deal that was 5 minutes away from me, as opposed to a rough parts bike 4 hours away.

I've wanted to find a late 80s GSXR750 motor to swap in. That would be a pretty drastic difference! The 1100 motor might be a bit much with the 600 frame/tire setup ;)

I would prefer 750 Kat motor, it has more torque than all the 750 sportbikes of same age (and below 9,000rpm made more power than most of them) It's also a direct swap and cheaper than a GSXR motor
You can 'upgrade' Kat motor with cams and carbs, porting would add a bit more HP.
Bandit 1200 gains around 20BHP from just a decent exhaust. Suzuki claims around 112bhp but they 'only' make around 95~97 at wheel.
With just an aftermarket exhaust system 115~117 at wheel is easy.
It needs GSXR750 cams, 38mm carbs, K&N filters to get much over 135~ 138bhp at wheel though. (only needs very minor porting toi get 140~145bhp)
Fitting 600 ignition lets it rev higher but then things break

I like the idea of a 750 motor. I'm not looking to go too crazy with power, tbh the 600 never seemed like it needed a ton more to me. But, with $ how it is I think a 750 swap is a bit farther in the future.

Faster until I swap in a motor ;D

If you could get 750 motor just use all the 600 parts on it. (carbs, exhaust, ignition)
Shouldn't be much difference in price between the two?
Avoid first year 750 though unless it's had the warranty work already done (it had a second gear problem - they must have had a Yamaha designer do it? ;D )

I'm hoping to find a decent 750 parts bike so I can use the carbs, exhaust, oil cooler, and ignition from it. Probably won't make a huge difference, but if I'm gonna do it I'd rather swap over all the correct 750 parts.

Quick DT2 question... Does the trans just use regular motorcycle oil? I have some 10W-40 motorcycle oil here, just wanted to make sure that'll work

Sweet. I'm gonna clean the clutch plates off with some steel wool and soak everything in 10W-40 for a while, then put it all back together. They were definitely stuck, so I think that should solve the clutch not working, just need to dial in the adjustment on the other side
