KZ200 - Simple little one lunger

I know it's a KZ200, but it was FREE...

This is awesome.

Re: I know it's a KZ200, but it was FREE...

Glad to hear it did you well with a KZ200 - I've read a few stories about dry cam bushings, but it should do me fine to putt around town. Do remember what the top end was? The original owner told me she'll do 70.

Mine had sat for about 20 years until I started riding it- My grandpa gave me the bike when I was 13 or 14....something like that... and it only had a couple thousand miles on it. Once we got it running, that thing ran like a top. Always started right up, and it would happily run all day with no problems. I remember the top end well- I was always chasing it ;) Mine would indicate 80. I probably only weighed about 120 pounds then, and there's always a little "margin of error" with the speedos on bikes....so yeah, I'd say that 70 sounds reasonable if she's in good tune.

So the clear coat took a little longer than anticipated. I can tell you that the SprayMax 2K clear will go on just fine over cured acrylic enamel. I've never seen anything this good come out of a rattle can. After the first coat, there was an incident involving a hornet and a half inch wrench. Needless to say, I had a bit of rework to do. I chose to paint the fuel cap satin black, as well as the tank badges. I scraped the black off the chrome letters after painting.

Here is how she sits now. I need some foam for the seat and a license plate. Now time to fire her up.

Looks great man!!! I was thinking of putting my chrome front fender back on the GS. After seeing yours, think I will....

There is no shame in a small cafe. Bike looks nice. Does the paint resist gas?

Everyone I talk to says that it resists gas, but I'm not about to test it!

I have 3 coats of clear on, but only because I damaged the second one. I probably would have stopped at 2. I found that the can runs out with little warning, so you'll have to plan your job wisely. One can really isn't enough for a tank and a seat together. I'm not a painter, but I suspect that most of the reason that I didn't need 50 coats is that my base coat went on so nice. I used automotive acrylic enamel mixed in a rattle can and it had a pretty decent surface before I cleared it.

Gee, I dont know if I'd trust that personally.. Much rather buy the grip glue stuff specifically for installing grips. Hate to see you have an accident if a grip came off while banking around a corner.

I have used hairspray and had very few issues. The only issue is if you get in pin leaks or ride in the rain the water will reactivate or cause the hairspray to break loose. I started using cheap rattle can clear. Works the same as the grip glue (and dirt cheap at waly world) Slides right on. then gums and sticks tight as crap. I have used it on BMX, MOtorcysles and the like in rain, mud, sleet and had no slippage whatsoever.

Thanks Gary - actually the hairspray is letting go just slightly on the non-throttle side. Either I got moisture in it, or the powder coated bars are just too slick. I may try some clear coat that I have lying around or just quit being so cheap and grab some grip glue!

Update - she runs! The first time I fired her up, I had forgotten to put in the pilot jet. It started, but smoked like mad. Once I found the pilot jet at the bottom of the cleaning tub, I took a spin around the back yard and it idled for a bit, but it's not sorted 100%. It looks like my pilot jet is cracked, so I need to track one of those down first. On another note, those EMGO shorty mufflers are ridiculously loud. Good thing this little bike is so small - it can only move so much air.
Since I've put on a pod and a muffler, I'll keep everyone posted as to the final jetting. Right now I'm sticking with the #38 pilot, and I changed the main from a 105 to 112. I also have a 110 and 115 to test.

So I'm getting pretty close to the end - I'm just waiting for a new pilot jet to come in. It wasn't idling right and when I pulled it apart, I found this:

I'd like to do a nice vinyl or leather seat in the future, but for now I bought some ergo matting from the hardware store. It may be questionable for long rides, but it's better than sitting on hard fiberglass and bolts.

Well, my goal back in December was to drive the bike to Port Dover on Friday the 13th, and I made it. It was a real thrill, but also a little nerve-racking. At the time we left, I had only put on 6km since the tear down. Here is the bike in Dover beside my brother's Harley. It makes it look tiny!
