I picked up 3 kz400's a few weeks ago, one 78 thats complete, running and riding, one 77 that's my project bike, and another 75 parts bike for $400. My plan is to take the 77 and make a rigid frame bobber which I started doing today. Progress pics are below. I have a problem with the travel of the front forks as you can see in a couple of the pics so some advice would be appreciated for that. My thoughts are to stiffen up the forks somehow or another, I think....talk to me fellas.
Here's what I accomplished today
And a blurry pic of my buddy holding up my vrod headlight to get an idea
No updates today unfortunately since I ran out of argon for the MIG yesterday right as I was going to weld the top tubes for the hard tail on. Hopefully going to get gas after work today and at least tacking the two top tubes on tomorrow afternoon. Stay tuned fellas.
Tank came in and I plopped it on there to see what it's gonna look like…I'm not entirely impressed by the first fitment, the forks hit the front of the tank without turning them all that much so I'm not sure what to do. I may reshape the front of the tank to pull the "ears" that stick more forward in a little bit but I didn't really have much time to play with it, tomorrow I'll be able to take a look at the whole picture. I attached a picture of it place on the bike, overall I like the look…just need to get the hardtail completed.
I got over to the shop today for a couple hours before I have to go to pool league to ply with the tank and do a little more prep work for the hard tail…
Good news is that where the tank sits now with the top section of the tunnel cut out seems like it'll work as far as not hitting the engine and the forks. The forks turn nicely and tuck inside the front "ears" of the tank at full lock. As you can see from the pictures the engine is now out so I'll have to wait till the hard tail is done and engine is reinstalled for finish mock up before I can confirm all of this but here's a couple pics.
Also, it seems as if there should be plenty of room up inside the tunnel for all of my electronics and a small battery to keep the clean look I'm after. All in all, a pretty successful hour and a half two hours spent to ease my mind a little bit. I'll be back at it tomorrow for a couple hours so I might have a small update then as well.
Keep the comments coming whether it's positive, negative, or constructive critisism.
I lost all the pictures on my phone so I only have one for you guys....it's been a busy two days getting the hard tail done…I know she looks long but I think it'll look much better once the rear fender is on and the seat is mounted.
Does anyone know what the width of a xs650 rear axle is? I'm not a huge fan of how this one fits so I'm thinking I may try to get an xs650 axle and bearings to fit.
