Just snapped up a '77 KZ400 on the cheap, hoping to build a sort of tracker/brat thing. Got the bike, a Clymer manual and a box of parts for $200.

I'm naming it "Bangarang" after the battle call of the Lost Boys from the movie "Hook", and after my favorite musician's new album.

Will post pics of the purchase tomorrow when it's light outside.

I will say, the wiring harness is effed up something awful... is there anyone out there that makes a complete wiring harness, or anyone here that can help?

Re: KZ400 Brat/Tracker - "Bangarang"

Is there any reason I can't go out and buy the wire and do something up myself? Like this?

Has anyone tried something similar?

Re: KZ400 Brat/Tracker - "Bangarang"

love the drawing, sorry wireing diagram. i'm looking at doing the same (guzzi) so watching this post.
But i would put a relay on the headlight, less likely to burn your switch or light fade over time.

Alright, here she is in all her glory o_O

Parts that were in the box:

And here she sits behind my apartment. I took off the pipes and pulled back the wiring harness...

It looks like the PO just started ripping on the wires without even looking first... some wires are just duct tapped together and ripped apart.

Re: KZ400 Brat/Tracker - "Bangarang"

you can do it yourself, i haven't had a go yet personally.. im keen to have a go sometime soon tho..
i have heard you can bank on 10 hours work doing one yourself?? can anyone confirm?
heaps of time in routing the wires and getting the right length etc..

Re: KZ400 Brat/Tracker - "Bangarang"

Are wiring diagrams universal across the KZ400 platform? Because I actually prefer this one:

Re: KZ400 Brat/Tracker - "Bangarang"

The first one, (with the duct tape) I know if off of the field coil... but where does it go now?

The second has 3 wires, so its off of the alternator, but where does it go now? Straight to the the rectifier?

The next goes to the battery it looks like....

The next has a white plastic clip...

I'd like to be able to do this set-up, because the stock one is gone (the PO just started ripping stuff out),

What do I need to do next?

Re: KZ400 Brat/Tracker - "Bangarang"

Just a couple things I see already. Your starter gear and chain are missing. This now means you are kick only until these are put back in place. To do this, you will need to wire according to this diagram here...

Familiarize yourself with each component and where each wire goes. I would recommend the kz400 twins forum for most technical stuff regarding these bikes. There are two different charging systems that the kz400 had throughout the years, and unfortunately yours isn't capable of running without a battery.

Alright, much to my disappointment, I had to sell the ride... There was simply too much wrong with it. The harness, the carbs and finally I discovered a hole in the piston. I had no desire to dump money into it like what it needed.

I sold it to a gentleman tonight for the same price I bought it for, so i'm not out any $$, but I did learn a ton, so I got something out of it!

The buyer wants to part it out, so he didn't mind the issues.

Keep an eye out for a new project soon, "bangarang" will live on!!

hello i have a 78 kz 400 electric starter only and i need a wiring diagram someone can help ?

Your best bet is to find the shop manual on the KZ400.com site and download it. In the back are the stock wiring diagrams. Someone also took the time to put a complete manual together in PDF form that is searchable. That isn't linked to from the KZ400.com site but is linked to in the Kawasaki Twin Owners Forum (http://www.armbell.com/forum/index.php?mforum=kz400). If you haven't been there already (either the KZ400 site or the forums) you should spend some there reading through the KZ400 section. Do a search and you should find a link to the manual easily enough.

Thank you , but I Ment to ask for a simple wiring Diagram somthing that include the headlight brakes light and the estarter . Thanks

Nice start so far
