Kz400 Clutch Troubles

I am running out of ideas and am looking for advice. I bought a kz400, got it running, and noticed the clutch was trouble. I replaced the plates, springs, cable and oil of course. Followed the adjustments in the book. Still having a problem getting into neutral. Sometimes when I come to a stop it kicks into neutral just fine. Other times it seems the foot lever is just stuck in first, cant move it up at all, to neutral nor second. Although if that happens then I hold the clutch lever in, flip the kill switch and then it goes into neutral just fine... Can someone please explain what is going on here?

Thanks,
Joe

Tell me how you adjusted the clutch.
You probably did the job right, but let's make sure.
Because more than likely you have a bent shift fork.
And that would mean splitting the cases.

I did the basic cable/clutch adjustment as the owners manual states. This included the worm screw which was not very clear. It said to loosen the worm screw and then tighten it until it is "hard to turn" and then turn it out a half turn. So I tightened it until I started to feel resistance turned it in out a half turn and locked it. Rode it around, still had the problem. I kept repeating this turning in the screw a little at a time. Still have the problem after a couple times.

on my XS360 last week it wouldn't shift into first or up shift or do shit .....i dunno what happened but all of a sudden while i was riding thing went loopy on me .....I get home and realize the shifter was hitting the Exhaust pipe and if i re positioned it, it would hit the motor.....is your shift lever hitting the pipe?

Did you loosen up the adjustments at the lever and the middle of the cable?
Then adjust the one at the sprocket cover. Followed by the one in the middle
and the lever last.
