Picked up a project early kz550ltd that as far as I know just needed this piece welded back on(for the engine anyways its a basket case). My question is this piece in an area that will have to seperate or hold oil? Local guy Tigged it for 10 bucks but he couldnt' get any on one side (side closest to the wall) I'm reaching out and trying to see if its worth putting back together or is it shot, and need to be parted out?
Note: I posted this in the engine section and no reponses yet just looking to get some help so I can get started duritg the weekend. Thanks guys
Is it for the shift shaft?
If so does it still line up?
Bore needs to be cleaned up.
If your still worried, use a dremel or similar.
You will need open fluted carbide burs.
V out the remaining break just a little and rough up the surrounding area.
Then mix up some jb weld.
This will be a learning process I've neve use those bits your talking about or done any engine grinding. I also read some bad news in the boook that once the shift saft is removed something falls in the back and now has to be split?
yes the cover for this area is the output shaft cover, it has a seal that goes between voer and block. these are the pictures I mean concerning the casted hole a few inches below the shifter perch.

If in voer you meen cover, that is called a gasket.
The shift shaft seal is in the cover.
The hole your referring to sits at about the same height as the repair.
It would help if you would take your pic as if it was in the bike.
I'm not used to laying on my side when looking or working on mine.
Good news I re-read the part I was worried about having shift forks fall and what not like I said this is how I inherited the bike, and thought I read a part saying if shift shaft is removed the shift forks will fall and case must be split to reset. instead it actually read "If shift ROD is pulled out..ect.ect" So get this fixed and no case splitting I hope., and maybe have a running engine to mess with. Sorry yes I meant cover some of the responses are from my phone between stops and redlights. Also my apologize for the pictures Its on a bench stand and I had no strap at the time so it wants to lay with cylinders down. Another question, is there a suitable sealtant that can be used on this transmission output shaft cover, versus buying a gasket kit? I can deal with a little leakage main concern right now is to see if engine fires correctly and work from there, or atleast thats my way of thinking. All advice is very appreciated.
1184/three bond(?
The grey liquid in a tube.
Put a little dab on your finger and apply it to the surface to be sealed.
Needs to be about the thickness of the gasket or a little less to work best.
Well on hold until xmas. My dremel got destroyed when we had heavy rains and it flooded in my garage, didn't know it but it was in its case on ground got water in it and sat for 3 months, Fried. Told wife yesterday I was heading to lowes to buy another one she stopped me in my tracks and said I can't but I'll have one by the 26.
She is and I love her to death but luckly I double checked with her to make sure she knew what a dremel was, apprently she doesn't so I guessing I might have a drill or something coming, either way tomorrow morn I'll pick up a dremel anyone seen a good deal? the package deals seem like such a waste to me. And I'm starting to read scary reviews of the newer Dremels. Mine was a solid unit from like 02 or something.
Well final got the garage cleaned up enought o have a safe area for the engine to be pulled apart. My first concern was brought back to life. I had hoped the case didn't need to be split since I realized the hole that needed to be repaired was for the Shift shaft, not the shift rod. Well looking back at it today I realized the shift ROD had been removed and according to the manaul will need case splitting to reinstall. On a good not the manual only shows two pages worth of info to split it and the entire top end stays intact? Awesome i'm loving this engine already. I'm trying to see about either buying a special tool ( or having my local welder make one to hold the alternator in place and to remove "secondary nut" and then the alternator itself. So i should have more posted soon and since the damaged hole may have more access I'll ask my welder to try and touch up the back side as well. Now however i'm going through the parts box to find the shift rod.
Anyone know where I can find an exploded view or explain to me how to put the starter gear/clutch back together? While pulling it out per the manual. the inner blocks? came out and theres a spring in one of the groves. any help would be appreciated I can start putting it back together soon.
