Leaking oil everywhere after rebuild.

duggyb

where are the skis?
Well had my bike out for its first real ride tonight and got it up to temp. Along with the build I also did all new gaskets and fresh rings/hone bead blasted pistons and stone ground gasket surfaces.

Base gasket seems not bad a little sweating but looks normal.

Head is leaking in 2 spots. Both by the bolts on the outside.

Valve cover is leaking in two spots (could just be my job putting the grey gasket maker on?)

Generator side cover is leaking from the bottom.

I'm running AM SOIL 10w30 motorcycle oil.

Wrong oil? Do I need to re torque the head? Should those outside bolts have some sort of sealant applied? Where did I go wrong?

Thanks
Dustin

It's possible it needs to be re-torqued after you put some miles on it.

Don't think the oil thickness is much of an issue but i use 10W40 (as prescripted for my bike)... sorry I can't be much more of a help.

If it keeps on leaking you can also apply a small amount of sealer on the gaskets as long as you don't come near your cilinders with that stuff.

Yes I am going to pull valve cover and re torque, I really don't want to have to pull the head again to add sealant to the gasket.

Because of where the head is leaking do you think I should apply some of the same grey sealant I used on the valve cover on the threads of those 2 outside bolts and re-torque? those are the only 2 places on the head its leaking.

as for the generator side cover I can easily apply some gasket sealant to that gasket. and i will do clutch side as well. And maybe those Allen keys need a re-torque as well.

I am not familiar with Am Soil. Synthetics leak more than natural oils. if you are using synthetic, you might switch back

i was afraid someone would say that, I know on my old 7.3 ford diesel it doesn't like synthetic either, will start to leak out everywhere. I just run fossil oil in it. Looks like I will do a re-torque and switch the bike back!

Thanks
Dustin

Synthetic is a terrible idea on a vintage bike.
Run what the engine is meant for, zero reason to change.
"New" isn't an "upgrade" plenty of motorcycles ran and raced with "normal" oil for years.

But in reality I would assume something is up with the gasket. Maybe torquing the head will help.

Were those bolts called out in the Factory Service manual to get any thread sealing compound?
sometimes they do, but not sure what engine we are dealing with here....

SORRY! the engine is a CB360 from a 1977 CJ360, I don't recall them being called out or I would have done it, I don't recall any gaskets requiring any sort of sealant applied, just all dry.

I will check my manual when I am home. I put the whole thing together as per the manual so I think i would have caught that.

The gasket surfaces were stone ground as well by the guy that did the hone on the cylinders.

as for the oil, its all i had here and have used in other newer bikes so I just grabbed a couple liters off my shelf and put it in, wish I would have been thinking.

I wouldn't worry about the oil, I use full synthetic high detergent oil in my 378 motor
re-torque head, the outer 6mm bolts last.
Overtightening them can actually cause a leak, particularly if the 8mm studs are not increased in pressure. I use about 4ft/lbs extra on the 8mm studs and 2 ft/lbs on the 6mm bolts

Just had a thought, check the engine breather isn't trapped anywhere, crankcase can get pressurised and blow oil from every seal and gasket ;)

Would this cause minor oil seep through the tappet cover?

Minor leak on one cover will be thin 'O' ring or cap machined too deep, when breather is blocked it leaks from every seal as well as most gaskets

I use 25ft/lbs (or lbs/ft ;) ) for 10mm and about 10 ft/lbs for the 6mm on the ends, although they may need changing to a better bolt, stock Honda can stretch or snap if over torqued even a small amount

Any update on your oil leak?

I just started my 360 after new rings and HG and have leaks at the same spots.
