leaky brake lines

installed new stainless lines on my 74' cb450 and during the bleeding process i noticed that the lines were leaking where the fitting connects to the line. used a 11mm wrench and tightened it as best i could but it's still leaking, and i'm afraid if i try any harder i might strip the threads. called the manufacturer and he suggested i use teflon tape on the threads, but i thought that brake fluid dissolves the teflon tape :-\ , any suggestions?

here's a photo of one of the fittings, ignore the drip of fluid where the fitting connects to brake joint (bolt just wasn't tight enough)

Are you using fresh crush washers and banjo bolts? Sometimes old hardware just won't seal up properly. Had a similar problem on my 360. New bits took care of it.

it's not leaking where the banjo bolts and crush washer are connected, but where the fitting connects to the line. the bajo bolt is threaded and just screws into the line

Ohhhh. Didn't catch that. Weird. That's a head scratcher.

Brake lines should not be taped - if there's a leak, you want to know about it before it blows. I'd be looking for a refund and get lines from a quality source.

got the lines from Charlie's Place (http://www.charlies-place.com/PAGES/Store/store_brakeline_kits.html).

i'll double check everything tonight and if it still leaks i'm going for the refund.

$160 for 2 leaky brake lines? I would be looking for a refund and not a replacement.
Forum member Pampadori makes custom kits for less than that. I have had him make me some and the quality is there.
He has a 74 CB450 kit for $67 custom made to your specs in color and length:

Slingshot cycles also makes quality stuff. I believe you get ten percent off if you enter "cafe" in the code box. Research that, I may only think I remember it.

Surprised to hear that - they have a good reputation. That said the price is outlandish

yeah, i've had good experiences with them before which is why i want to make sure that i'm doing everything correct before returning them.

but if they continue to leak, i'll probably return them and grab a set from slingshot cycles.

I have the Slingshot Lines on my CB360. High Quality, DOT approved.

If you get a refund, go Slingshot....

Big difference between DOT compliant and DOT approved. They are not DOT approved. Approval means you have gone through the DOT testing. Compliant just means they are the same spec.

Still better than "not" dot compliant.

I would stick with the known lines Spiegler, Galfer or HEL. We sell tons of Spiegler and HEL lines and can have them made in any configuration you need. Those K7 fittings where you screw the banjo connection onto the lines I have seen several issues with.

I would stick with the crimped style lines.

Lifetime warranty, well made...I am using them and after seeing the quality of the finished product, have no reservations recommending them.

I have Galfer lines on my NH750, and the quality on the Slingshot lines is as high or higher.

Properly crimped is better then lines assembled from fittings. The less fittings, the less chance for leaks and issues. Crimped is also less bulky and cleaner looking too.

I just go to the local hose and rubber suppy company that makes lines for industrial and auto applications while you wait .. Sometimes they don't have the fitting that I need and I wait 2-3 days for them to come in, but I usually pay about $15-$30 for a crimped brake line with colored hose or braided stainless and a little more if it requires extra fitting like an elbow or other connector.

If you are near a larger city, there's bound to be at least a few hose companies that can make brake lines to your exact spec. I have at least 5 businesses where I could have this done within a 10 minute drive.

Maybe I am wrong and the industry is right here locally, but I doubt it, a lot of industrial and mechanical equipment use hydraulic lines.

What I did like about slingshot is the connectors are exactly angled and placed as stock fittings. Even the orientation of the fittings are right, so that there is no twisting of the line to get the banjo's fitted. Since I am using the stock setup, they fit perfectly. There are all sorts of paths, but I really think Slingshot is a good source, correct fitment, quality made. That adds a bit of value to me.

+1 to this.

The Slingshots look to be great quality and are a fair price at $32 or so a line.

I was just putting another option out there.
