I agree with your dad. Go with a good marine grade vinyl. It'll hold up to the elements(should it get rained on), and will be easier to keep clean.

+1. There is no replicating the feel nor look of real leather but they can get really close now with the advancements in marine grade vinyl and leather requires a lot of maintenance, wears out, and weathers a lot worse/quickly than marine grade vinyl... My local seat guy does amazing work and is reasonable on pricing... Here is the seat from my 87 super magna done in peanut butter ostrich and regular black, all marine grade vinyl. Charged me $160 for custom stitching, design and upgraded material... Amazing hand stitched work and holds up amazingly.

Ok you guys are starting to change my mind. Im gonna get an estimate tomorrow so hopefully they'll have some samples i can check out.

My guy has like 300 colors, 70's hard candy, ostrich, boa, gator, Louis vitton, coach, etc, etc, he can do custom anything you want. Custom thread colors and patterns, everything... He's very good at what he does. He males seats for people all over the US also. You can ship him your pan and he'll make whatever you want and ship it back... My friend got a black gator one done for his 08 night train and it looks so freaking bad ass!! I'll see if I can get a good pic.from him.

I cut an old leather chair up and used that. It looks like a cat scratched it up a few years ago, because it did.

I am going to have mine covered in my old leather riding jacket. More for sentimental reasons than practicality.

I would like to defend Mr. Ard from any accusations of being a cheapskate.

He has an artist's eye for the genuinely patinaed objet.

Crazy

I went with a pleather marine vinyl for ease of maintenance and price. im paying an upholsterer to do my seat but I bought the material myself. keep in mind leather is harder to work with so an upholsterer will charge more. at $150 for a tuck and roll job I wouldn't want to pay anymore

gone rogue or in the shed

I did both. Vinyl and then a softer leather over the top. Comfy, looks good and stays waterproof.

Cheers
Steve

I payed 145$ and I just had to provide the seat pan, thats it.

I dropped off my seat pan with foam but im in australia so im kinda impressed the price is so close...we usually get completely gouged for everything! haha

Did one in water buffalo shoulder hide, has help up fine for the last 12 years or so. Generally do everything now in marine or arctic grade vinyl. Much easier to deal with, heat gun takes out any corner puckers.

why limit seats to just leather and vinyl ? ;D

I just redid my seat and I used this stuff called hi-tack black. Its pretty nice vinyl and makes you feel a little more connected to the seat.

Does he have to mow and trim it every time it rains? ;D Does it turn brown in the winter?

Most likely, however I would not want one.... I'm not so concerned with the general maintenance... I actually enjoy lawn work....

It's the grass stains in my ass crack that that would be difficult to explain to my wife ::)
