Leather seat building

Been Around the Block
No, this isn't for any of my cafe projects, but I think its still applicable to show you all how easy leather is to work with.
This seat is for my chop. The seat pan is 11 guage, and the foam is a Walmart yoga pad.
I wanted this seat to be tuck and roll, but I really like working with leather and molding it, so I thought what the hell, I'll do my take on tuck and roll!
The pictures pretty much speak for themselves
Layout the spacing

Cut the foam strips

Then dye that shit

Tomorrow I'll take it and get it stitched up at my man Robert's shoe repair. Then trim down the edges to the stitching and finish the edges and she'll be ready!

niiice... where do you get the leather? what kind of dye is good? is there anything you have to do to it to shape it????? more pics more pics! :)

made it look simple. up on the more pics the seat looks good. i'm trying to get my girls sewing machine to work but i don't know what is wrong with it

My boy Robert does some fine stitching! I could have stitched it by hand, even bought all the stuff to do it! But I figured, why ruin it when it only costs $30 and I know it'll be right.
Here's the result

Hey, the leather I got at Tandy, and I use Fiebings Dye. That is USMC black on the seat. To shape all the leather all you have to do is get it wet with warm water. Its pulls like taffy. Unbelievable the first time you do it. This is the second seat I've made, and I've made other little things as well. Its fun, you should try making a cool molded leather seat pad for one of your seats, it would be rad!

you might look to see if tandy has a store local to you or find a leather store locally, i found a leather store locally, i have not made any leather seats but i made a mag holder for my 1911, and dad made a holster for mums gun from leather, it is an easy material to work with, be sure to get some leather cutting scissors too :D

tobiism, that is a great looking seat and chopper :) what ounce of leather did you use ? cowhide or horse leather ? we mainly use latigo for holsters and i made a mag holder for my 1911 out of ostrige (spelling ?) leg

Yup, I got all the leather and supplies from the local Tandy store in Tempe AZ.

Thanks for the compliments! This seat was made with 4-5oz vegetable tanned cowhide. The last seat I made I used 6-7 oz. and it was very stiff, with very little give. I used the 6-7 hide for a cell phone holster for my stepdad and that worked perfectly.

Leather seat here I come!

Nice choice on NOT having idiot monkey pegs on your chop. Looks like its could actually be ridden farther than the local Starbucks!
Dig the bare looking tank too!

Thanks, its actually very comfortable to ride. The foot pegs are actually raised 2" to tuck me into the bike even more. When I'm riding my elbows actually rest on my knees. I feel more in control of the bike.
What are "monkey pegs"?

monkey pegs.....feet sticking nearly straight out in front of you, bending the rider in half to reach the pegs and the bars.

Ahhh, forward controls. I never liked them. Being able to post up over big bumps is a definite must on a rigid, even with a sprung seat!
